US Open Betting Preview – Future Odds To Win the US Open
By Nila Amerova
Next week the world’s top tennis stars head to Flushing Meadows for the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. Three-time defending champion Roger Federer was seeded No.1 for the fourth consecutive year. Our best Sportsbooks has tennis betting odds on Federer listed as a -250 favorite.
Roger Federer’s US Open warm up – although not perfect by any means, according to his standards – was a promising one. A finalist at the ATP Masters Series in Montreal (lost to Novak Djokovic) and winner at the ATP Masters Series in Cincinnati (defeated James Blake), Federer could not be more prepared to defend his US Open crown.
No.2 Rafael Nadal is tipped at +500 with Our best Sportsbooks. Rafael Nadal’s US Open series was not his best performance this year by any stretch of the imagination. In Montreal, Nadal did not appear to be in his best form. He struggled through the rounds, persevering all the way to the semifinals, where he lost to the eventual champion Novak Djokovic. Considering Federer also lost to Djokovic, Nadal’s loss does not necessarily affect his odds for the US Open. If Nadal were questionable for the US Open, it would be due to his withdrawal from the ATP Masters Series in Cincinnati. Nadal complained of illness and soreness in his left arm. While Nadal’s appearance is still confirmed for the US Open, if he is not in top form, his run may not live up to the promise set by his remarkable season thus far.
Notwithstanding the questions that abound, it is safe to say that whenever Federer and Nadal appear at an event, and if things go according to form, they are likely to face one another in the final. After all, Federer and Nadal account for the last ten Grand Slam titles, going back to the 2005 Roland Garros won by Rafael Nadal!
There is not much separating the world’s best tennis players – Federer is the King of Grass and Nadal the King of Clay. On hard they are tied at two a piece, but Nadal holds the advantage with a lifetime record of 8-5 against Federer. Should they meet in the final, their match should live up to their earlier contests at this year’s Grand Slams – 2007 French Open final (clay) and 2007 Wimbledon final (grass). For that matter, it may very well supersede either, for on hard, they may be on more even ground, with neither holding a definitive advantage.
If there were one player to threaten the rivalry of this doublet, it would be No.3 Novak Djokovic. Djokovic shot up the ranks this year, on a winning wave that saw him amass a 52/13 record for the season, which includes four ATP titles. (Federer holds a 45/6 record for the season and five ATP titles; Nadal holds a 59/10 record for the season and six ATP titles.)
Djokovic trails 1-4 against Federer and 2-5 against Nadal in career head-to-heads. Strengthening Djokovic’s US Open odds (tipped at +500 at BetUS.com Sportsbook) are his performances at the ATP Master Series Events this year. In Indian Wells Djokovic finished as the runner-up (lost to Nadal in the final); in Miami he won the title (defeating Canas in the final); in Montreal he won the title (defeating Roger Federer in the final).
With his remarkable season, there is no question that Djokovic can potentially shake up the duo’s strangle hold on Grand Slam titles.
As for No.4 Andy Roddick (2003 US Open Champion) there is little to recommend him. Recently replaced as the world No.3 in the ATP ranks by Djokovic, Roddick is increasingly left behind. So much for his assertion of bridging the gap the Federer/Nadal rivalry created in tennis.
If Roddick’s season and overall performance this year is an indication, then the US Open title is beyond his reach. Roddick’s two ATP titles this year were earned with victories over players that ranked beyond the top 100 – at the Stella Artois Championships in London, England, he defeated No.106 Nicolas Mahut to win the title; and at the Legg Mason Tennis Championships in Washington, DC, he topped No. 416 John Isner for the title. Against the top three players (Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic) Roddick trails 0-3, having lost to each once.
While the chance to win the title exists for Roddick, for that matter even for the rest of the playing field to some extent, out of the favorites at the US Open he is by far the long shot bet. BetUS.com Sportsbook has Roddick at +1200.
