Texas has won each of its first six games by double-digits but has failed to get the cover in its last two outings. Longhorn backers are hoping that trend ends tonight against 22-point underdog Long Beach State.
Texas is off to its third 6-0 start in five seasons. They boast one of the nation's top defenses, limiting opponents to 52.3 points and 32.4 percent shooting and they’ve won by an average of 26.2 points per game. However to the dismay of many they failed to get the ATS victory against Rice and USC in successive games.
As expected when you’re dealing with one of the elite teams in the country, the books have set the lines pretty high in all but one game. Texas was favored by 7.5 against Pitt and covered. The highest number was 26.5 against Riverside a number they easily handled in an 89-42 rout.
The Longhorns are coming off a 19-point victory over USC (-21). Despite not sending its backers to the bank, Texas did turn in a dominating defensive performance forcing a season high 17 turnovers and holding the Trojans to just 30% shooting.
If there’s a reason Texas isn’t perfect ATS it’s because of their struggles at the free-throw line. The Longhorns' were a humbling 19 for 34 against USC dropping their season average to 62 %. SC also held them to less than 42 percent shooting from the field.
Long Beach State has lost two of its last three games. They were blown out by 8th ranked West Virginia 85-62 and came up short against Clemson 87-79 before beating UCLA for the first time 79-68. Of course EVERYONE is beating UCLA this year. The 49ers are the pre-season favorites to win the Big West Conference and are 3-3 all time against Texas.
I’m not sure which Long Beach team will show up tonight but it may not matter if Texas continues to play defense like they did in their last outing. My biggest concern with laying the big number is the Horn’s free-throw shooting. It's simple hit just a couple of more against the 'Niners and we're in the money.
