NHL Power Rankings January 2
Looking for our updated NHL Power Rankings? Two weeks have passed since my last edition of the Power Rankings – the calendar has flipped and so have the top dogs in the bi-weekly Power Rankings. The Columbus Blue Jackets start 2017 on a 15 game win streak – incredible while the #2 team Minnesota just had their 12 game streak snapped by the Jackets.

The usual suspects are lurking for sure but there is ZERO argument about which two teams reign supreme this week.
So where does your favorite team sit as we roll into the dog days of NHL Regular Season? Let’s take a look in Dave B’s bi-weekly NHL Power Rankings.
1. Columbus Blue Jackets (26-5-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 3
Not many saw this coming! I mean this team didn’t lose a game in the month of December! Columbus has scored 123 goals this year and allowed 73 – good for a +50 goal differential.
Everything is going right for this team right now – the offense is doing its part and Sergei Bobrovski has elevated his game to an absolutely elite level.
I don’t know if it lasts but for now the Jackets are the #1 team in the Overall Standings and the biggest surprise in recent memory.
2. Minnesota Wild (23-9-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 7
Ditto for the Wild. A 12 game win streak to end 2016 was mighty impressive. They too have been buoyed by some stellar goaltending – Devan Dubnyk has been terrific and the forwards have been doing their parts as well.

Minnesota is as complete a team top-to-bottom as there is right now and an easy #2 on this week’s Rankings.
3. Pittsburgh Penguins (25-8-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Penguins have gone 7-1-2 in their last 10 games overall – Sidney Crosby continues to score at an incredible rate and the supporting cast has been very good as well – the team is second best in goals for this year.
Injuries have started to rear their heads for Pittsburgh – goaltender Matt Murray is sidelined for a team giving up an unflattering 107 goals against so far this year.
4. Chicago Blackhawks (23-11-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 1
The Blackhawks haven’t done a whole lot wrong the last couple of weeks – the teams around them have just been a little bit better. They are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games overall and still looking like the biggest threat to come out of the West.
The Hawks are getting healthier by the day which certainly helps.
5. New York Rangers (26-12-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Rangers enter the week on a three game win streak and have gone 7-3-0 in their last 10 games overall.
They are still the best team in the league in terms of goals for – 135 so far is good for 3.46 per game and they still have some guy named Henrik Lundqvist patrolling the crease.
6. San Jose Sharks (23-13-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 8
The Sharks just keep getting it done – they are 8-2-0 in their last 10 games – the third hottest team in the game heading into 2017.
Brent Burns looks a whole lot like a Norris Trophy winner right now and the Sharks defense has been off-the-charts – 80 goals against so far equates to 2.16 goals against per game this year!
7. Montreal Canadiens (22-9-6)
– Two Weeks Ago: 5
The Habs have been playing some ho-hum hockey as of late – just 4-3-3 in their last 10 games.
Injuries are partly to blame for sure – once healthy I expect Montreal to return to a top 5 team. A .500 record on the road is a bit of a concern as well but this team is too good to have such average stats right now.
8. Washington Capitals (22-9-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 9
The Caps have been better the last couple of weeks – 6-2-2 in their last 10. A 1-4 record in the shootout is a bit of a head scratcher however.
Washington remains one of the best teams in terms of goals against – just 78 in their 36 games this year and they obviously have the offensive talent to make some noise.
9. Edmonton Oilers (19-12-7)
– Two Weeks Ago: 13
The Oilers re-emerge into the dirty dozen this week thanks to a 5-2-3 stretch in their last 10 games. What’s most impressive about this young team is their 10-5-5 record on the road.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The Oilers are far-from the doormat they have been in the past – my guess is that a playoff spot is imminent this year!
10. Boston Bruins (20-15-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 14
The Bruins have gone 5-2-3 in their last 10 games and enter this week on a two game win streak despite not getting the best out of some of their Studs. Patrice Bergeron has been a major disappointment and now David Backes is out with a concussion.
Boston is better than advertised though thanks to Tuukka Rask who is back to his All-Star form.
11. Ottawa Senators (20-13-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Senators hold at #11 this week thanks to a three game losing streak.
The team still sits 12th in the Overall Standings despite being without their top 2 goaltenders. Ottawa is still knocking on the door of a top 10 spot – a little more consistency and goal scoring will be needed to accomplish that goal!
12. Anaheim (19-12-8)
– Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Ducks have gone 4-3-3 in their last 10 games overall – just good enough to keep them in the dirty dozen. Ryan Kessler has taken his game to a different level and as a result the Ducks are top 10 in the Overall Standings.
Of concern are the 109 goals against this year and the minus 2 goal differential.
13. St. Louis (19-13-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 10
14. Philadelphia (20-14-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 6
15. Toronto (17-12-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 20
16. Tampa Bay (19-15-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 16
17. Calgary (20-17-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 17
18. Carolina (16-13-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 18
19. Los Angeles (18-15-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 15
20. Florida (16-14-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 19

22. Nashville (16-14-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 25
23. Detroit (16-16-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 23
24. Vancouver (17-18-3) – Two Weeks Ago: 26
25. New York Islanders (15-15-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 27
26. Winnipeg (17-19-3) – Two Weeks Ago: 21
27. Buffalo (13-15-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 22
28. New Jersey (14-16-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 28
29. Arizona (11-21-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 29
30. Colorado (12-23-1) – Two Weeks Ago: 30
