Could this finally be the year of the Chicago Cubs?
Will David Price make that much of a difference in Boston? Can the Mets ride one of the best pitching staffs in baseball? Can the Astros take the next step?
Let’s take a look at all of the teams’ odds as we start to signal the beginning of what should be another scintillating year of Ball – and who could be the last one standing on an inevitably chilly day in October.
Chicago Cubs
2016 World Series Futures Odds 7/1
The Cubs lost in the NLCS last year and will be motivated to get back to that stage once again this upcoming year. The nice thing about them is that they will return largely the same lineup that seriously contended all season long in 2015.

Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, Addison Russell, Javier Baez and Jorge Soler are as solid a core of position players of any team in the NL – Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist bring a nice element of experience to this young team.
Add in Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester at the front of the rotation and there looks like zero reason the Cubs won’t be competitive again in 2016.
Boston Red Sox
2016 World Series Futures Odds 8/1
It is a little tough for me to fathom that one man – David Price who will play once every five days can be enough for the Sox to be a serious player this year. There are still holes in the Sox which makes me uncomfortable – holes in the Sox make anyone uncomfortable!
San Francisco Giants
2016 World Series Futures Odds 10/1
The Giants made a huge splash in the offseason with their signing of Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija. They are, on paper, one of the scarier lineups in MLB again – certainly capable of winning it all again this year.

After all, it is an even-numbered year – that’s when the Giants coast through the year and dominate in the playoffs! They will have to overcome the Dodgers in their own division however – not an easy task!
Houston Astros
2016 World Series Futures Odds 12/1
The patience of long-suffering Astros fans is finally starting to pay off! One can’t help but think that the team overachieved last year when they made the playoffs and lost in the ALDS. That said a little playoff experience for this young club should serve them well.
While I don’t like Houston to win it all this year they definitely are a team to watch in the not-too-distant future. Their time is coming!
New York Mets
2016 World Series Futures Odds 14/1
The Mets WILL have the best rotation in baseball this upcoming season – young and talented arms that will be motivated after their World Series loss. This team retained Yoenis Cespedes and didn’t really lose all that much from their roster from last season.
I expect the Mets to make the postseason once again and with the arms they boast, the sky is the limit for this team indeed.
Texas Rangers
2016 World Series Futures Odds 15/1
Yu Darvish and Cole Hamels make up a pretty good top of the rotation and the offense should still be good.
But there are still some holes on this team and the age-factor may loom large for a team that may just fade down the stretch.
Washington Nationals 15/1 – Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez make up one of the best rotations in the game – bar-none. Bryce Harper is one of the best players in the game – period. So why are the Nationals down at 15/1?
Management and questions about team chemistry is why! As long as Jonathan Papelbon is on the roster something seems amiss with this club!
Los Angeles Dodgers
2016 World Series Futures Odds 16/1
Some of the luster has definitely worn off this team – the departure of Zach Greinke could loom large for this club. That said the addition of Alex Anthopoulos – architect of the legendary Blue Jays deadline deals last year could just take this team over the top.
Clayton Kershaw and Yaseil Puig are going to have to be at a different level this season but almost nobody can spend money like the Dodgers. Expect some serious moves to bolster this squad and for Los Angeles to be heard from this year.
New York Yankees
2016 World Series Futures Odds 16/1
The Yanks lost out on some big free agents in this offseason and enter this year with an OK, not great team. I have no faith in this aging club.
Pittsburgh Pirates
2016 World Series Futures Odds 18/1
Lost in the Wild Card game last season but still have the talent all over the field to contend. Their outfield is one to fear but there are some huge question marks in the rotation ahead of this season.
Expect Pittsburgh to be competitive but fall short again as the better teams in the NL outlast them.
St. Louis Cardinals
2016 World Series Futures Odds 18/1
The Cardinals are perennial contenders and this year should be no different. Adam Wainwright is healthy again as is Carlos Martinez which makes St. Louis’s rotation one of the best in the game again.
The Cards did lose a bit in free agency but if there is an organization that can withstand any loss – it is St. Louis – one of the best top-to-bottom clubs in the game.
Toronto Blue Jays
2016 World Series Futures Odds 18/1
The Jays look like decent value at 18/1 – don’t they? After all, they will still have one of the most dominant offenses in their game and they should get a full season out of Marcus Stroman.
[dfads params=’groups=213&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The loss of David Price will definitely hurt but something tells me that there is some magic in the arms of Stroman Aaron Sanchez, Marco Estrada and J.A. Happ. Expect this team to make a couple of in-season moves and for this team to beat up on opposing pitchers again.
If the pitching overachieves and the team somehow learns to play small-ball this could be Toronto’s year!
Arizona Diamondbacks 25/1
Cleveland Indians 25/1
Detroit Tigers 25/1
Kansas City Royals
2016 World Series Futures Odds 25/1
The defending champs aren’t getting a whole lotta love – are they? They lost Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist to Free Agency but this is still the same team that has made it to the Final Two in the last two seasons.
This is still the best team in the World on paper – so why are they down at 25/1? I’m not sure but I am certain that I will be throwing a little money KC’s way again this year at 25/1!
