WHERE DO TEAMS STAND IN MLB?
After some MLB Power Rankings? Two more weeks have passed in Major League Baseball – there has been a little shakeup at the top of the Rankings although #1 is and should remain the same for the foreseeable future. The waiver deadline has passed, the September call-ups have taken place and teams will be forced to go with what go them there the rest of the way.
Version 8.0 – 2016 MLB Power Rankings
It’s stretch time in the Major League Baseball season – where does your team sit as we start the final month?
Let’s break it down in the September 5 edition of Dave B’s MLB Power Rankings.
1. Chicago Cubs
(88-48) Two Weeks Ago: 1
The Cubs maintain their spot at the top of the Rankings and enter this week having gone 8-2 in their last 10 games – they are a treat to watch!
They had the hitter of the month Kris Bryant and pitcher of the month Kyle Hendricks and they just finished a four game series in which their starters allowed 12 hits and 10 runs! Incredible.
They have a 16 ½ game lead in their division and have shown ZERO weaknesses so far.
2. Texas Rangers
(82-55) Two Weeks Ago: 5
The Rangers have started to surge again – they have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games overall and they are the first AL team to 80 wins.
Adrian Beltre continues to defy father time, Cole Hamels has been very good and Roughned Odor continues to put up some serious numbers for the team.
Like the Cubs there are very few if any weaknesses on this team heading into the stretch.
3. Washington Nationals
(79-57) Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Nationals have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games overall although they enter the week on a two game losing streak.
Steven Strasburg should return this week to give them an added boost and the addition of Mark Melancon to the closer role may just take this team over the top.
They get the Phillies and the Braves this week so expect the hot play to continue.
4. Cleveland Indians
(79-56) Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Indians are more like a 3B team rather than a #4.

Their starters have been the best in the AL all season long shockingly and they enter the week on a nice six game in streak with sweeps over the Twins and the Marlins.
The waiver trade deadline brought Coco Crisp into the fold – an underrated move for a team that looks solid already up and down the lineup.
5. Toronto Blue Jays
(77-59) Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Jays still lead the competitive AL East but lost 2 of 3 over the weekend to the last-place Rays.
The pitching, which somehow owns the best ERA in the AL is finally experiencing the hiccup many predicted and the offense has gone a tad cold.
Still, Toronto is 6-4 in their last 10 games – they now know how to win in September and will be awfully tough down the stretch.
6. Los Angeles Dodgers
(76-60) Two Weeks Ago: 7
The Dodgers rise one spot in the Rankings despite a 5-5 stretch and having lost a series to the Rockies.
The biggest reason for their rise in the Rankings – the return of Clayton Kershaw to a team that has more-than held its own since his injury.
LA has built a three game lead in their division without Kershaw and gets a whole lot better with him.
They has a wealth of pitching now and the offense continues to do its part. Watch out for the Dodgers folks – they are for real!
7. Boston Red Sox
(76-60) Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Red Sox have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games but sit just one game out of first in the AL East and on top of the AL Wild Card standings.
Rick Porcello is 19-3 on the year, Eduardo Rodriguez has been pitching lights out and the offense has been typically sensational – everything is going right for this team.
The Sox are a threat indeed – both in the AL East and in the Wild Card.
8. St. Louis Cardinals
(71-64) Two Weeks Ago: 8
The Cards have struggled the last couple of weeks – just 4-6 in their last 10 games overall but stay in the top 10 largely because they still own the second Wild Card spot in the NL.
The pitching is still banged up – hopes are they get healthy real soon.
The offense continues to lead the NL in home runs – 194 so far on the season.
9. Houston Astros
(72-64) Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Stros have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games – heating up at the right time and making things awfully interesting in the AL Wild Card race.
Dallas Keuchel and Doug Fister are a legit 1-2 punch in the rotation and any team with Jose Altuve should be a contender.
If Houston can ever figure out the Rangers (they are 3-13 against them this year), a Wild Card spot could be a reality.
10. Baltimore Orioles
(74-62) Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Orioles have gone just 4-6 in their last 10 games but they still own a Wild Card spot in the AL.
The pitching has been suspect to say the least but the offense has been doing its part for sure (a lot like the Blue Jays of last year).
Chris Tillman is back from injury though which certainly helps and a series win over the weekend over the Yanks couldn’t have come at a better time.
11. Detroit Tigers
(74-62) Two Weeks Ago: 14
The Tigers are really coming on – they enter the week tied for the final Wild Card position in the AL. They swept the White Sox last week and won their weekend series with the Royals – peaking at the right time.
[dfads params=’groups=213&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The offense has been led but the scorching JD Martinez who is hitting nearly .400 since returning from the DL 30 games ago and the pitching has been solid thanks to Justin Verlander and rookie Michael Fulmer.
Gotta love Detroit right now!
12. San Francisco Giants
(73-63) Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Giants’ slide continues – they have gone just 16-30 since the All-Star break and have gone 7-17 in their last 24 on the road. So how do they hold on to a spot in the dirty dozen?
They have shown signs of life lately and they played the Cubs awfully tough on the weekend. Don’t panic yet Giants fans – your team should be fine!

- 14. New York Mets (71-66) Two Weeks Ago: 18

- 29. Atlanta Braves (54-83) Two Weeks Ago: 30
- 30. Minnesota Twins (51-86) Two Weeks Ago: 28
