The actors may have changed slightly, but the first round of the playoffs will feature a familiar show as the Memphis Grizzlies take on the San Antonio Spurs. This will be the 4th time in the last seven years that these two have met in the playoffs, with the Grizzlies winning in 2011 and the Spurs taking the series in 2013 and last year.
These two split the regular season series. Both teams won both of their home games, but the Spurs took the last two meetings– winning 95-89 in overtime in their last matchup on April 4th.
The Memphis Grizzlies essentially limped into the playoffs. They have been playing some of their worst basketball of the year over the last month. They come into this one losing two straight and five of the last six, but they had locked in the 7th seed by the last week of the season.
The San Antonio Spurs put together another great year, which we have come to expect from one of the most consistent franchises in sports. They lost three straight, but they had already secured the 2nd seed with two weeks left in the season.
Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies played well through the first half of the year under first-year head coach David Fizdale. It looked like the usual strong defense, little offense, Grit n’ Grind Grizzlies basketball that we have seen for years.

However, Fizdale did tweak things slightly, sending longtime starting forward and Memphis favorite Zach Randolph to the bench and starting JaMychal Green in his place. The move looked good at first, as Randolph did a great job leading the second unit and still playing over 25 minutes per game.

It’s hard to say exactly what went wrong in the second half of the year, but Memphis has been flat-out bad lately. Before the All Star break, it looked as though the Grizzlies were a sure-fire 4th or 5th seed in the West, but they continued to fall and landed at 7th.
There is no question that defense will be the key to their success if Memphis can pull some upsets. They have the 3rd ranked scoring defense in the league, allowing only 100 points per game. Unfortunately, they only score 100.5 points per game which ranks one spot ahead of dead last in the NBA. They rank 24th in rebounding with 42.8 and 21st in assists with 21.3 per contest.
Mike Conley leads the offense with 20.5 points and 6.3 assists per game. NBA All Star and former Defensive Player of the Year Marc Gasol adds 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists a night. Coming off of the bench, Zach Randolph contributes 14.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs have been so consistently excellent for so long that it’s almost boring at this point. We have come to expect greatness out of them, and they did not disappoint in 2016-17.
San Antonio won over 60 games in the regular season for the second straight year this season. They have won over 50 games for 18 consecutive years, and this will be their 20th straight winning season.
Although the record ended up the same, the actual basketball has been quite different for the Spurs this year. This is their first year without Tim Duncan, and Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli are clearly shells of their former selves.
However, Kawhi Leonard has made up for all of that this season and has proven himself to be one of the best players in the NBA and a legitimate MVP candidate. LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol have also been key contributors to the new-look, same-results Spurs.

San Antonio has been one of the most well-rounded teams all year. They score an average of 105.3 points per game which ranks 14th in scoring. The Spurs rank 11th in rebounding with 43.9 and 7th in assists with 23.8 per contest. On the other end, the Spurs allow only 98.1 points per contest which ranks 2nd in the NBA.
Kawhi Leonard leads the way with 25.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. LaMarcus Aldridge adds 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds, and Pau Gasol contributes 12.4 and 7.8 points off the bench. Tony Parker still contributes and runs the offense with 10.1 points and 4.5 assist a night.
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Series Prediction:
San Antonio is the clear favorite in this series, and for good reason. Both of these teams have elite defenses, but only the Spurs are able to actually put points on the board. The Grizzlies’ offense has been downright shameful, especially over the last month.
It will be interesting to see the Gasol brothers face off, but that will probably be the extent of the drama in this series. I do expect Memphis’s offense to show up for at least one home game and allow them to win one, but the Spurs should take the rest decisively.
