Handicapping 2016 College Basketball Futures Odds
I don’t know about you but I am not keen on making future predictions on college hoops early in the season but at this point, barring injuries, we have a very good idea of what to expect from here on out – as much as that is possible for event they affectionately call March Madness.
I just scanned the current NCAA Championship odds and before conference tournaments, automatic bids, committee slights and more here are some teams to consider (at a variety of price points).
The values might never be better than they are right now. .
North Carolina Tar Heels
2016 College Basketball Futures Odds 8/1.
The Tar Heels were at the top of national rankings in a lot of preseason polls. I think it is fair to say they are having a good regular season but they have certainly not been a juggernaut. They might win the ACC regular season title but winning the tournament is going to be very tough.
The key thing for this group is to enter the Big Dance healthy.
We have still not seen a ton from G Marcus Paige this season. Maybe the senior is saving it for when everyone is watching.
2016 College Basketball Futures Odds 10/1.
Kentucky has gotten better as the season has progressed and they can use the final few games and postseason tournament to continue to do so.
The reason to like these guys is their awesome backcourt of Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray. Not many are better and there is so much they can do.
Up front they have enough size to bother anybody defensively and if one of their frontcourt players steps forward they could be on a long journey.
2016 College Basketball Futures Odds 14/1.
The Terps have been atop the polls earlier but have probably unperformed this season, certainly G Melo Trimble has. However, he definitely looks like the kind of player who could lead a team to championship by putting together a great run of games – See Kemba Walker.
Plus it is not like he is surrounded by stiffs either. They might have the best starting five in college hoops and there is no obvious weakness.
Wichita State Shockers
2016 College Basketball Futures Odds 33/1.
The key for this one is that number. Some are saying the Shockers need to the win the Valley to make it but I think they are pretty safe barring a catastrophe. I know I said
I liked the UK backcourt but VanVleet and Baker are still the standard in the college game for me. This team is not as good as the last couple of years but the backcourt stands out and they have been there before.
They are not going to get into the moment and then waffle under the pressure. At this value they are definitely worth putting a few down on.
2016 College Basketball Futures Odds 33/1.
It has taken a little while but Texas seems to be finally figuring out how to play under coach Shaka Smart. This group has talent and Smart definitely knows how to prime a team to go on a run.
The thing they are missing the most is that very steady hand at guard. But they are tough to play against and can make teams uncomfortable. They could certainly take down a #1 in the second round.
They have played enough of those calibre teams in the B12 too.
2016 College Basketball Futures Odds 66/1.
Ben Simmons may be brilliant but LSU’s season has been messy. Instead of riding his coattails to the top of the rankings they have had only moments.
This would be a totally gutsy call given their current record but they have a good shot to come out of the SEC Tournament (if they don’t win it) with 20 wins.
Since their status is uncertain this would really be a gamble but there is enough talent for this group to go on a run a la Kansas with Danny Manning.
2016 College Basketball Futures Odds 100/1.
The Trojans definitely look like they are tracking for a return to the Big Dance. If they do they have a coach who has had success there before and this time he has the talent to compete with most if not all.
The Trojans play as fast as anybody and even though most think it is easier to play with flow if you are not used to it could be a challenge on a short turnaround. They also have enough size to not get pushed around.
Similar to Texas they would be a very dangerous team to a top seed. They knocked off Arizona earlier this season.
