While a player can be a star, if his team isn’t ranked near the top of the standings, the recognition seems to be gone.
Below are some of the frontrunners along with some darkhorses for the upcoming season.
2018 Heisman Trophy Odds: Sam Darnold (QB USC) +250
The quarterback is arguably the most important position on the football field and is the position most likely to win the Heisman Trophy, so it’s not surprise to see Sam Darnold come in as the odds on favorite to be taking the award this season.
[dfads params=’groups=220&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Darnold had a dream freshman season for the Trojans. He threw for over 3000 yards and 31 touchdowns while only throwing nine interceptions.
Team success is a huge factor in winning the Heisman, and everyone believes that USC is set for a big year. Almost all of the National polls have the Trojans in the top five in the pre-season rankings.
2018 Heisman Trophy Odds: Baker Mayfield (QB Oklahoma) +700
At this point it feels like Baker Mayfield has been in college forever. He returns a Oklahoma team that is a preseason top 10 team but he has the biggest uphill battle of any of the top three favorites.

He lost his favorite receiver Dede Westrbrook and both of his top running backs to the draft, so the offense is going to be more reliant on him, which could actually turn out to be a good thing.
The other thing he has working against him is he keeps having little run ins with the law. He needs to stay on the field to have a chance to win this award. If he is able to stay on the field he is in position to put up some godly numbers once again this year.
2018 Heisman Trophy Odds: Lamar Jackson (QB Louisville) +800
Lamar Jackson burst onto the seen last year winning the Heisman Trophy which gives him a whole different set of expectations for this year.
If he has a great year this year, but they aren’t as good as last years there is a chance he wouldn’t win the award, even if he was the most deserving, just because it wasn’t as good as last year.
Last year he threw for 3543 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also ran for 1571 yards and 21 touchdowns. If his offensive line can step up this year I like his value at this price.
2018 Heisman Trophy Odds: Saquon Barkley (RB Penn State) +1400
Saquon Barkley is most certainly going to go pro after this season, but he feels like he has some unfinished business at Penn State after they just missed the playoffs.
He is already being a once in a generation type running back product for the NFL so at +1400 he has a ton of value. He rushed for almost 1500 yards last year and 18 touchdowns.
He also had over 400 yards receiving and four touchdowns. He is in line for a huge year but the biggest question for his chances is how well Penn State will fair as a team.
If they are in the top 10 by seasons end, I really like him as a middle of the road play for the Heisman.
2018 Heisman Trophy Odds: Josh Rosen (QB UCLA) +2000
There is a good chance Josh Rosen is the first quarterback taking off the board when the 2018 draft comes around. He has all the makings of an NFL quarterback, but there is one thing that might limit that, and his chances for a Heisman, injuries.
He really had to carry UCLA last year and got beat up a lot. In late November he was finally knocked out for the season with a shoulder injury. Before that injury he had thrown for 1915 yards and 10 touchdowns. If he can keep healthy this year he is a propsecto to watch out for.
2018 Heisman Trophy Odds: Luke Falk (QB Washington State) +330
Luke Falk doesn’t get a lot of attention for two reason, he is on the west coast, and Washington State just isn’t that good. But he really is a good dark horse that could be one of those guys in the discussion before seasons end.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He threw for over 4400 yards last year along with 66 touchdowns. He benefits from a Washington State team that scores a ton of points and plays a very fast pace.
2018 Heisman Trophy Odds:
- JT Barret (QB Ohio State) +800
- Jalen Hurts (QB Alabama) +900
- Bo Scarbough (RB Alabama) +1200
- Deondre Francois (QB Florida State) +1400
- Derrius Grice (RB LSU) +1400
- Jake Browning (QB Washington) +1500
- Nick Chubb (RB Georgia) +1600
- Mason Rudolph (QB Oklahoma State) +2000
- Trace McSorley (QB Penn State) +2500
- Nick Fitzgerald (QB Mississippi State) +3300
- Kamryn Pettway (RB Auburn) +3300
- Shane Buechele (QB Texas) +3300
- Cam Akers (RB FSU) +4000
