2016 U.S. Open Championship Preview
Lightning quick greens, typically thick U.S. Open Championship rough, the Church Pews Bunkers and the par 5 667 yard 12th hole await the world’s best on its 7,254 yard par 70 track.
Driving accuracy will be key here – errand tee shots will not be tolerated – almost unfair thick rough and 210 bunkers will destroy those who can’t control their shots.
Once on the greens, placement will also be essential – the parking-lot quickness and ridiculous undulations will ensure that only the creative and abnormally patient will thrive.
Only those will a terrific all-around game should be considered.
With that in mind who should we keep our eyes on as the best in the world take on one of the toughest and most prestigious tests on the planet?
2016 U.S. Open Championship Golf Favorites:
Rory McIlroy +700
Arguably the most well-rounded player in the world has been looking forward to this event – he had a win in Ireland and a T4 last time out at Memorial – he now has six straight top 12 finishes around the world.
He is No. 1 on TOUR in strokes gained off the tee and third in strokes gained tee to green – his putter had been a concern before a good performance a couple of weeks ago.
Rory is due for a Major win – it’s been two years and should be high on the leaderboard all week.
Jason Day +700
Has been the best player in the world the last year – 12 top 10 finishes in his last 19 events played – seven wins including three of his last seven (THE PLAYERS a month ago being the best).
[dfads params=’groups=248&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He has never played a competitive round here but that shouldn’t matter – of greater concern is his T27 finish last time out at Memorial.
Day is a Stud that relishes the spotlight – look for him to bring all of his immense skills this week.
Jordan Spieth +800
The defending Champ Spieth has been a bit of a mystery the last few months indeed. After his meltdown at the Masters he missed the cut at THE PLAYERS only to win the Dean & Deluca at Colonial.
He had a 57th place finish at the Memorial as well!
But keep in mind that Spieth has finished fourth or better in four of the last five Majors and Oakmont is a putter’s track.
Consider Spieth a serious threat for a bounceback effort this week.
2016 U.S. Open Championship Golf Contenders:
Dustin Johnson +1400
Has recorded seven top 10s in his last 12 starts (five top fives in last seven starts) and enters this week is fifth on TOUR in strokes gained tee to green and seventh in strokes gained approaching the green – perfect for this track.
He won’t be able to use his patented power off the tee that much but it certainly won’t be a detriment.
DJ will be motivated to avenge last year’s meltdown at this event. He has been inside the top 5 in the last two US Opens and is expected to be in the mix again.
Justin Rose +2800
Will test his injured back and wrist this week. He has five Top 10’s in 11 events this season and was 10th the last time the US Open was held on this track.
He sits second on TOUR in strokes gained the to green, 12th in strokes gained approaching the green and 25th in strokes gained around the green – great stats ahead of this test.
Hideki Matsuyama +3300
Had gone T6, T18, T7, T11, and T7 in five tournament before missing the cut at the Memorial.
He seems to show up in big tournaments – he was top 10 at the Masters and THE PLAYERS and has two top 20 finishes in three attempts at the US Open.
Matsuyama, outside of one bad outing is one of the hottest players on the planet and could be your champ Sunday.
Danny Willett +4000
Will be chasing his second straight Major and enters off a third-place finish at the BMW PGA Championship.
He is terrific in all aspects of the game – his touch on and around the greens should be a serious asset this week indeed.
Willett is a tad under the radar but definitely shouldn’t be.
More 2016 U.S. Open Championship Golf Contenders:
Sergio Garcia +4000
The TOUR leader in greens in regulation percentage enters off a win at the AT&T Byron Nelson – his second top 3 finish in his last three starts overall.
He is also 23rd on TOUR in total driving which will help this week – could it FINALLY be Sergio’s year?
Matt Kuchar +4500
Kuch has been one of the most consistent guys on TOUR the last few months – top six finish in each of his last four starts. A strong all-around game and a perfect temperament for Oakmont make Kuchar an intriguing +4500 this week.
Forget that he missed the cut the last time the US Open was played here – Matt should be a factor.
Brooks Koepka +4500
Lost in a playoff at the AT&T Byron Nelson and tied for second last time out at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
His stats support a good week here – 20th on the PGA TOUR in total strokes gained, and T3 in proximity at TPC Southwind – fifth in scrambling at that event.
He was T4 in the 2014 US Open and was T18 at Chambers Bay last year.
2016 U.S. Open Championship Golf Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Patrick Reed +5000
Lovin’ Reed at +5000 – he has nine Top-10 finishes this year and leads the PGA TOUR in strokes gained: around-the-green and ranks second in scrambling.
Although he has yet to record at top 10 finish in a Major and he missed the cut at THE PLAYERS Reed has the game to make a run here. It’s only a matter of time – like him or not!
Charl Schwartzel +6600
Has recorded a win and seven Top 25’s in just 11 TOUR events this year including a T11 at Memorial last time out and enters this week with some solid stats to support a good finish.
Sixth in strokes gained approaching the green, ninth in strokes gained tee to green, 11th in scoring average, 33rd in strokes gained around the green, 64th in strokes gained off the tee and 86th in strokes gained putting.
He has two top 10 finishes at the US Open and four top 20s in this event in the last seven years. Charl may be the best value on the board.
2016 U.S. Open Championship Golf Picks:
You could certainly make a case for all four of the betting favorites but I am leaning Jordan Spieth’s way. In a tournament that will likely come down to putting, Spieth is a cut above.
My sleeper is Patrick Reed at +5000. His all around game makes him a threat every week – happy to get him at this price.
