Congressional Country Club is a Par 71 – 7,569 yard track that will reward elite ball striking – distance off the tee has always been a key stat on this exceptionally long course. Accuracy is also critical as is hitting greens and putting well on Congressional’s small and tough greens.
So with that in mind who should we be keeping our eye on this week on one of golf’s toughest non-Major tests?
Let’s break it down.
2016 PGA Quicken Loans National Favorites:
Rickie Fowler +1400
Fowler is the biggest name in the field – too bad his recent play doesn’t reflect it. He has missed the cut in three straight tournaments ahead of this week – not on my radar!
Patrick Reed +2000
Missed the cut last week at Oakmont but so did a ton of top tier guys! Before that he posted consecutive top 15 finishes and now has nine top 10s on TOUR this year. He ranks first on TOUR in strokes gained: around-the-green, 4th in scrambling and T15 in par-5 scoring.

Reed had the 54 hole lead here in 2014 only to falter to 11th – decent track history and current form make him one of the faves this week!
Jim Furyk +2200
Returned to prominence thanks to a T2 at the US Open that featured a superb 66 on Sunday. He’s not the longest hitter but is worthy of mention after last week’s effort – the fact that he’s played well at Congressional also helps.
2016 PGA Quicken Loans National Contenders:
Gary Woodland +2800
Big hitter had six straight top 35 finishes including a T4 at Memorial before an uncharacteristic missed cut last time out in Memphis. He currently ranks fourth on TOUR in driving distance, 26th in GIR, 14th in strokes gained: tee-to-green and fourth in par-5 scoring – perfect for this track.
He has a pair of top 25 finishes at Congressional: a tie for 16th at the 2013 Quicken Loans National and a tie for 23rd at the 2011 U.S. Open and is a decent bet to make some noise this week.
Marc Leishman +2800
Has finished inside the top 20 in three straight events including a T18 last week at Oakmont. Leishman is four-for-five at Congressional with a pair of top 25 finishes including a T8 in 2014.
The Aussie is quietly one of the hottest players in the field and should be in the mix this week as well.
Brendan Steele +3000
Steele is another guy that has been very good the last two or so months – top 20s in four of last five starts including a T15 last week. He has two starts at Congressional and has fared well in both – a T16 in 2013 and a T5 in 2014.
Steele can smash the golf ball, is 19th on TOUR in GIR and 42nd in strokes gained: tee-to-green which should help immensely.
Charley Hoffman +3000
Has been in the conversation every week lately and could be again. He was OK last week and now has four top 15s in his last seven starts. Hoffman finished T3 here in 2014 and is OK value at +3000.
More 2016 PGA Quicken Loans National Contenders:
Byeong Hun An +3500
Rookie An is an interesting name to watch this week – he lost in a playoff at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier this year, had a an 11th at the Memorial and an impressive enough 23rd last week in the US Open.
[dfads params=’groups=247&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
He quietly is one of the better putters on TOUR which should help this week and is sixth in birdies-or-better percentage.
His all around game is solid and his current form has me thinking he’s in for a good week.
Roberto Castro +4500
Castro has been very good lately – in his last three starts, he has recorded a solo second at Quail Hollow and a tie for 11th at the Memorial. He also finished second in this event back in 2013.
He ranks 17th in TOUR in driving accuracy and 15th in greens in regulation and is a sneaky +4500 this week.
2016 PGA Quicken Loans National Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Daniel Summerhays +5000
Played very well en route to a T8 at Oakmont and now has top 25 finishes in four of his last six starts overall. He is 31st on TOUR in adjusted scoring and has made seven straight cuts.
He showed me enough last week to plant him on my radar for this week!
Kevin Streelman +6600
Has posted two straight impressive results – a T13 at the US Open and a T8 at Memorial thanks to some solid putting which should be an asset this week. He is 17th on TOUR in GIR as well which should serve him well.
Shawn Stefani +6600
Lost in a playoff here in 2014 and enters this week of his best performance in some time – a T9 at Memphis. Stefani loves this track and could easily build on a season best effort last time out.
2016 PGA Quicken Loans National Picks:
In a relatively weak field I am going with some value this week. Brendan Steele at +3000 gets the nod. He has been solid the last couple of months and has been very good on this track – a T5 the last time this event was played here makes him my favorite this week.
My sleeper is Daniel Summerhays at +5000. He, like Steele has been consistently good the last few months and was impressive last week. I think his putter makes up for his average length off the tee.
