The field includes all of the top 5 in the World Golf Rankings and 21 of the top 30. Muirfield will be a typically interesting test – it doesn’t favor any-one style meaning that this week will be wide-open.
That said good ball strikers will rule the week – those who can place their shots, hit fairways and greens will likely be in the mix.
It should be an intriguing week for sure. Let’s take a look at who we should pay extra attention to.
2016 Memorial Golf Tournament Favorites:
Jason Day +650
The world #1 has struggled at Muirfield – a T27 has been his best finish here in seven tries.
That said Day has been terrific in the lead-up – seven wins in the last 10 months including the last time we saw him at THE PLAYERS.
His stats support the notion he will finally show up in this event – he’s second on the PGA TOUR in strokes gained: putting.
Day can never be counted out right now despite his lack of success on this track.
Jordan Spieth +650
Finally snapped a funk by winning last week at the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational.
We all know what can happen when Spieth has a little momentum! He played well the week before as well at the AT&T Byron Nelson when a final round 74 derailed his chances.
He has finished inside the top 25 in two of his three appearances here including a T3 last year.
He leads the TOUR in adjusted scoring and birdies-or-better percentage and could be prime for yet another magical run.
Rory McIlroy +750
Fresh off a terrific win at the Irish Open and now has five straight top 12 finishes – as consistently good a player as there is outside of Jason Day.
He has three top 15 finishes here and although he hasn’t been sizzling on this track should be able to parlay his stats – #1 in par-5 scoring and third in strokes gained: tee-to-green into yet another great finish here.
2016 Memorial Golf Tournament Contenders:
Hideki Matsuyama +1600
Won this tournament in 2014 and finished T5 here last year – he loves this track!
Add in the fact that he has five straight top 20 finishes on TOUR (four straight top 11s including a T7 at THE PLAYERS) and he should be in the mix.
Dustin Johnson +2000
Hasn’t been all that great lately but still has top 15s in six of his last seven starts. He has four top 20 finishes on this track in eight starts including a T13 last year.
He ranks third in driving distance, seventh in total strokes gained and third in birdie average – great stats for Muirfield. DJ is due for a big week – it could come here.
Matt Kuchar +2200
Kuch has woken up! He has gone T3-3rd-T6 in his last three starts overall and arrives at a track that he posted victory in 2013 and a T2 in 2011.
He has seven career top 15 finishes at Muirfield Village – current form and track history has Matt firmly on the radar this week.
Rickie Fowler +2200
Has somehow missed the cut in two of his last four starts including THE PLAYERS in his title defense. His other two starts over that span have produced top 20 finishes however – tough to figure out.
He finished second here in 2010 but hasn’t finished inside the top 35 in his last four starts here. Not sure what to make of Fowler this week!
2016 Memorial Golf Tournament Sleepers (+5000 or higher):
Daniel Berger +5000
Has finished inside the top 20 in five of his last six starts including a tie for fifth at the Shell Houston Open, a tie for 10th at the Masters and a tie for ninth at THE PLAYERS Championship.
He missed the cut in his only appearance at Muirfield but his trajectory supports the notion that he could have a breakthrough performance this week.
His weakness is his accuracy which is not an issue at Muirfield.
Chris Kirk +6600
Outside of a WD at THE PLAYERS he has found the top 15 in three straight starts – five top 15s in his last eight tournament overall! He has a pair of top 25s on this track in three appearances including a T4 in 2014.
Kirk is a threat every time he tees it up and if things go right he could be a factor this week.
2016 Memorial Golf Tournament Picks:
This is a tough week for sure – Jason Day has a poor record here and Jordan Spieth has played four weeks in a row.
That leaves Rory McIlroy at +750 to get it done. He rested last week and will be motivated to make good in a quality field.
I am high on Matt Kuchar as well but I am going with the Irishman to make some noise thanks to some momentum and stats that line up very well on this track.
My sleeper is Daniel Berger at +5000. He has been terrific the last couple of months and is due for a win on this big stage.
