A battle of two young Canadian squads with very different expectations for the 2016-17 season will do battle at the MTS Center in Winnipeg.
Toronto is slightly behind Winnipeg in the rebuilding process, as the Jets used high picks on approximately half of their roster to create one of the most talented young groups in the entire league.
Toronto has also had the “luxury” of selecting near or at the top of the first round for multiple years now, and have netted themselves a franchise-altering talent in recent #1 overall pick, Auston Matthews.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Auston Matthews made quick the entrance that was heard around the league, becoming the first ever player to score four goals in their first NHL game.
Not to mention, he was able to achieve this feat in just two periods, so his record for the first to four goals in their debut will likely hold for a long, long time.
Matthews looks to be the real deal, and the superstar face-of-the-franchise player for the next century.
While he didn’t record a point in his second game of the year, he’s helped lead the Leafs to earn a point in each of their games so far this season, albeit they’ve only played two.

Former top-5 pick, Mitch Marner, has had a strong showing early on as well and appears to be another key player moving forward, along with other young offensive threats in William Nylander and Nazem Kadri.
It will likely take some time for playoff success, but the Leafs are certainly headed in the right direction ever since the change in management and process under Brendan Shanahan.
Frederick Andersen now mans the crease for the Leafs, after an off-season trade that landed the young Dane from Anaheim that saw a 1st round pick and fellow netminder, Jonathan Bernier, go the other way.
Andersen currently owns a 2.98 GAA and .891 SV% early on, with overall career marks of 2.34 and .918, respectively. He certainly won’t have as strong of a defensive unit in front of him as he was accustomed to with the Ducks.
Morgan Reilly is the defensive pivot to build around, hailed as an excellent powerplay quarterback with explosive speed and strong hockey IQ.
He’s joined by Jake Gardiner, Nikita Zaitsev and Martin Marincin to round out the top blueline options in TO.
Winnipeg Jets
As referred to above, the Jets have used high draft picks on Nikolaj Ehlers, Mark Scheifele, Alex Burmistrov, Josh Morrissey, Bryan Little, Adam Lowry, Kyle Connor, Connor Hellebuyck and most recently, Patrik Laine.
The future looks bright for the squad in Winnipeg, but they hope that can start with a playoff berth this year.
The reliable Blake Wheeler leads the team in points with five total through the first three games, including three goals. His pivot, Mark Scheifele, continues to get better each year and is currently on a point-per-game pace early on.

Connor Hellebuyck now owns the starting role in Winnipeg, after Jets’ management finally admitted the mistake in handing Ondrej Pavlec a significant contract and holding on while he underperformed year-in and year-out.
Hellebuyck will one day be joined and challenged by fellow high selection, Eric Comrie, but for now he’s ahead on the depth chart. Hellebuyck owns a 3.45 GAA and .863 SV% this season.
Jacob Trouba is still an RFA and has requested a trade out of Winnipeg, but the Jets’ management is patiently holding steady knowing how many years he has until he’s an unrestricted free agent.
The contract disputes will continue for now, with the one-ice product on the blueline being led by Dustin Byfuglien, Toby Enstrom, Tyler Myers and Morrissey stepping into a larger role.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Despite not scoring in his second game, Matthews is still tied for the league-lead in goals with 4.
- Winnipeg won both matchups between the two teams last season, with a total goal differential of 10-3.
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs Winnipeg Jets NHL Hockey Prediction
Toronto is on their way to being a feared opponent, with the addition of Matthews being their franchise piece to build around.
It should be interesting to see how the top-two picks from this summer’s draft battle head-on and each try to prove why they should’ve been selected first.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Winnipeg ML.
Winnipeg is still simply a better all-round team, despite missing Trouba and what the current records may suggest. Matthews is always dangerous, but then again so are most of the forwards in the ‘Peg.
The edge on the blueline favors the more veteran squad in Winnipeg, led by Byfuglien who should matchup against the young Toronto phenom all night and welcome him to the league in the best way he knows how, in a physical battle.
