There is plenty of history and bad blood in this Western Conference first round playoff match-up.
Two seasons ago, the Sharks went up three games to none in a series that Los Angeles clawed back to win four straight and despatch San Jose.
It’s taken the Sharks a long time to bounce back from that collective mental trauma, but the 2015-16 Sharks look pretty good, led by veteran Joe Thornton and multi-talented blueliner Brent Burns.
Can San Jose’s goaltending hold up well enough to finally slay its longtime in-state rival?
San Jose
The Sharks used goal-scoring prowess courtesy of Burns and a two-goal effort from team captain Joe Pavelski to upset the Kings in Los Angeles in Game 1 of this opening series.

The visitors showed the spunk that they needed to in a scenario where it may be the last bite of the apple for the core led by Thornton, Marleau and constructed by GM Doug Wilson.
The sting of 2014 is still fresh in this franchise’s memory, so expect the ferocity from San Jose to continue.
The Kings will be searching for a reply on Saturday night, however.
The home side should come out in a far more spirited fashion, especially because the many East Coast hockey fans will be watching this late-night weekend tilt.
Los Angeles
Los Angeles’s core players were worth the price of admission even in a Game 1 loss; likely Norris winner defenseman Drew Doughty logged nearly 30 minutes of ice time. Battle-worn playoff veterans like Milan Lucic showed plenty of jam, smashing the Sharks and setting the tone.
Yet it still wasn’t enough in a 4-3 Game 1 loss. In addition to Doughty, the importance of Jake Muzzin on the blueline is becoming crystal-clear; his heavy slap shots can kick-start offense with a team like the Kings, who have no qualms crashing the net.
Ultimately, star goalie Jonathan Quick must be better on Saturday night. He let in four goals on just 23 shots on Thursday, registering just an .826 save percentage. The narrative before the series was that San Jose’s Martin Jones (or Jones and James Reimer) had to be able to equal Quick’s play, but the script was flipped in Game 1.

If Quick doesn’t capture some of his earlier postseason magic, the Sharks have more than enough offense to make him pay.

Free San Jose Sharks vs. Los Angeles Kings NHL Hockey Prediction
This is too lively of a rivalry and two team too closely matched for one club to grab this series going away. I expect Los Angeles to reply at home in Game 2, pulling the series even as it travels back north to the Bay Area.
Expect Jeff Carter and Tyler Toffoli to get on the scoresheet tonight, as the Kings summon the offense they need to pull even. I expect Quick to answer the bell; he’s done it too many times before. He has long been the bane of San Jose’s existence.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Kings ML
The Sharks won’t lie down tonight, but anticipate this series being squared at one apiece when Game 3 is played in San Jose. The Sharks grabbing Game 1 was huge for their confidence, however. This series should be a gem.
