The New York Islanders host the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday night as both Metropolitan rivals look for two important points in the conference standings.
Pittsburgh
With 76 points, the Penguins are just one point ahead of 8th-place Detroit for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot. The East is jam packed this year, and Pittsburgh needs to make sure it wins all of its winnable games from here on out.
That was not the case Saturday when the Penguins suffered an ugly 4-2 home loss to the Calgary Flames, but they responded nicely with a 6-1 drubbing of the struggling New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

The Pens will be in for quite the challenge when they travel to Brooklyn to take on the Islanders.
Pittsburgh is just 14-13-4 on the road this year, though the team has yet to make the trip to Brooklyn. New York is one of the hottest teams in the league and is being led by its dangerous offense that is scoring goals at will.
This means goalie Marc-Andre Fleury must be at the top of his game, something he wasn’t against the Flames on Saturday.
New York
The Islanders just completed a 6-1 road trip with a 6-4 shellacking against their in-state rivals, closing the gap with the rest of the conference’s best teams.
New York has also played three fewer games than the 2nd-place Rangers, so the Islanders are hoping to jump them in the standings very soon.
The Isles are playing extremely well at the moment, and they’ll be in for a gritty matchup against a Pittsburgh team trying to climb in the standings.

New York is averaging more than 4 goals per game over its last three contests, and the team is scoring even more than that at home. The Islanders have scored 24 goals over their last five home games, an average of 4.8 goals per game.
John Tavares and Kyle Okposo have led the team in scoring all season, and they’re big reasons why New York is scoring 2.86 goals per game, a mark that ranks 5th in the league.
On defense, the Isles are nearly as dominant. Led by goalies Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak, New York ranks 9th in goals allowed and the team also possess the NHL’s 2nd-best penalty kill.
The Islanders are a well-rounded team, and they’re hoping to cash in on all that momentum they gained during their dominant roadtrip.
