A pair of teams heading in opposite directions take the ice in Brooklyn as the struggling New York Islanders try to fend off the Philadelphia Flyers Monday night.
Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers weren’t able to get the better of their in-state rivals on Saturday. The 4-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins put the Flyers even further behind the Detroit Red Wings for the final playoff spot in the East.
Despite the loss, the Flyers are still playing great hockey, going 7-2-1 over their last 10 games.

Philadelphia was dealt a big blow Sunday when it was announced that goaltender Michal Neuvirth will miss three weeks with a lower-body injury. Neuvirth was 17-8-4 with a 2.25 GAA and .925 save percentage before being shut down for the rest of the regular season.
This puts the pressure squarely on the shoulders of Steve Mason who isn’t enjoying the same success as Neuvirth.
If there is a bright spot for the Flyers in this spot, it’s that they haven’t lost back-to-back games since Feb. 14. They’ve responded nicely after their five losses since then, scoring an average of 4.8 goals per game following those losses.
New York Islanders
The Isles failed to score a single goal against Kari Lehtonen and the Dallas Stars Saturday night.
Lehtonen has a save percentage of just .904 and 2.85 GAA and the Islanders couldn’t even get one puck past him. They’ll have to do a much better job if they want to beat the Philadelphia Flyers, a team that’s been one of the most efficient in the league over the last five weeks.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
New York is struggling badly on offense right now. The Isles are just 2-5 SU over their last seven games and are averaging just 1.57 goals per game during that skid.
Those paltry numbers are not going to get it done, and New York finds itself in 7th place in the conference with the regular season winding down.
The Islanders host the Flyers twice before the regular season ends, and they won’t be easy wins as Philadelphia fights tooth and nail for a playoff spot.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Flyers are 5-5-1 on the road vs. Metropolitan Division.
- Flyers are 3-0-1 in their last 4 games as underdogs.
- Islanders are 21-8-4 at home.
- Islanders are 9-8-2 at home vs. Eastern Conference.
- Islanders are 12-2-2 as favorites vs. Metropolitan Division.
Free Philadelphia Flyers vs. New York Islanders NHL Hockey Prediction
This game is a coin flip on paper, but the Flyers are the ones who have been playing much better lately. They’ve proven they can bounce back after a loss, and the Islanders are going through their worst offensive drought of the season.
New York has been pretty dominant at home this year, but Philadelphia is right there in the playoff hunt and won’t roll over in this game. I’ll stick with the hungrier Flyers.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Flyers +127
At +127, the Flyers offer some serious value. The Islanders are laying -140 and they’ve been playing awful. Give me the Flyers.
