One of the more intriguing matchups of the first round starts Thursday night as the New York Islanders and Florida Panthers go at it.
Both teams are nearly identical as they are both scrappy and extremely physical.
New York Islanders
The Islanders look to bounce back from a devastating first round series loss last year when they were bounced by the Washington Capitals.
New York limps into the postseason with back to back losses as they fell to Buffalo and Philadelphia. They dropped 2 of 3 in the regular season to the Panthers, but do have the winning streak as they defeated them back on March 14th at.
The Islanders will come into this series with the likelihood of using both goalies. Both Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak have been switching off between the pipes this season, but it’s Halak that will get the nod because of his career success against the Panthers.

Halak has gone 9-3 with just a 2.07 GAA in 13 appearances vs. the Panthers.
New York will lean on Jonathan Tavaras, Anders Lee, and Brock Nelson here in this series.
Florida Panthers
The Florida Panthers haven’t been a natural occurrence in the playoffs and certainly were one of the more surprises this season in the NHL.
This will mark just the first time since the 2012 season the Panthers will find themselves in postseason play. They finished the regular season with 103 points as they were projected far below that prior to the beginning of the season.
Florida has found success thanks to their veterans this year.

Jaromir Jagr, who sits at age 44, and G Roberto Luongo, who sits at age 37, both have been the biggest parts to this team this year. Jagr finished the season with 66 points to lead the team as he was stellar at finding the back of the net along with setting his teammates up. Luongo finished with a 35-19-6 record to go with a 2.35 GAA and .922 SV percentage.

This will exciting to watch. Two teams who really want it, especially the Panthers as playoff appearances have been very rare for them.
The key for the Islanders will be relying on their offensive threats. They need production from their first two lines to set the tone and not let Florida get into their comfort zone.
