It wasn’t so long ago that the New Jersey Devils were the class of the East and the Panthers were the laughing stock.
How times have changed, as the Panthers have undergone a full build from the ground up under new owners who are also finally willing to spend money and try to contend for a Cup.
The Devils, meanwhile, have been in steady decline with an aging core and difficulties drafting and developing top talent to take over, though new GM Ray Shero has made a “stroke of genius” trade early in his tenure, acquring Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson, in what could be a franchise altering deal.
New Jersey Devils
Taylor Hall will make his debut in a Devils’ uniform and he’s went on the record saying how upset he was that he was dealt from Edmonton and that he’s determined to make them look bad because of it.
So cue up the Hall revenge tour circa 2016-17, as he reunites with former junior linemate, center Adam Henrique, who may have just got the biggest off-season boost anyone could ask for.
The Devils now have two legitimate pairs of forwards for lines 1 and 2, with Mike Cammalleri and Travis Zajac manning unit-2 and giving strong secondary scoring support.

Hall will complement the only other star player on the roster, goalie Cory Schneider, who was also acquired in a favorable deal for the Devils at the 2013 Draft.
Since coming over from Vancouver for the 9th overall pick (Bo Horvat), Schneider has graded out as one of the league’s top netminders, with a .920 or better save percentage in each of his three seasons in Jersey.
In front of Schneids’ is a decent group of young blueliners, whom the Devils have invested numerous high draft picks in, namely Jon Merrill, Damon Severson and Steven Santini.
The loss of Larsson certainly thins the blueline out considerably, however.
Florida Panthers
After being terrible for a century-plus, the Panthers were granted with numerous top draft picks and now appear to have a strong young core that is ready to contend.
Former top picks of theirs include Aaron Ekblad (1st), Aleksander Barkov (3rd), Jonathan Huberdeau (3rd), Nick Bjustad (19th) and Lawson Crouse (11th), along with Mark Pysyk and Jared McCann, who were recent first-round selections as well that Florida acquired.
Add in Vincent Trochek, who has vastly outperformed his former draft selection at 64th overall and this is a strong, deep young core.

Florida signed top free agent defensemen, Keith Yandle and Jason Demers, to help solidify the back-end and provide some veteran leadership.
Speaking of veteran leadership, leading the way between the pipes is Robert Luongo, a former captain (I know, right…) and star goalie in the league to provide a steady hand behind the young squad.
Is this the year that the Panthers can put it all together and make a decent playoff run?
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- New Jersey was 19-19-3 on the road last season.
- Florida won the 2015-16 series between the two teams 2 games to 1- with the teams combining for 17 total goals across the 3 games.
Free New Jersey Devils vs Florida Panthers NHL Hockey Prediction
In a rematch of the Conference Quarterfinals from April, Detroit will be looking for revenge againat the Lightning squad that killed their Stanley Cup dream.
It won’t be an easy task however, as the Tampa Bay roster is about as strong as they come.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Florida Moneyline
This should be a decent battle, as the Taylor Hall and the Devils will be fired up to make a statement in their opening game of the year. Cory Schneider is always tough to beat but the defensive group in front of him certainly has their question marks.
NHL Free Score Prediction:New Jersey 2 – Florida 3
I expect Florida to ultimately win game #1 on home ice, boasting and all around better roster than NJ aside from maybe the crease, though Luongo is showing no signs of his performance dropping in his later 30’s thus far.
It will be entertaining to watch two former #1 overall picks battle, as Aaron Ekblad will look to shut down Taylor Hall.
