The Edmonton Oilers and the New York Islanders do battle in Brooklyn as both teams look for two points after playing games the day before.
While the Islanders are trying to catch the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers in the standings, the Oilers are just trying to win anything.
The Edmonton Oilers were dealt an awful blow when their No. 1 overall pick Connor McDavid broke his clavicle in the beginning of November, forcing him to miss the next three months of the season.
The injury devastated the team and took the wind out of its spirit. The Oilers slumped through the rest of the season just like they did last year: Not very well. But since McDavid returned to the team following the All-Star break, Edmonton has been scoring goals at an unusually alarming rate.
Though most of their offensive stats have been middle-of-the-road this season, the Oilers scored a combined 12 goals in their first two games of the second half. Goaltender Cam Talbot, who’s also struggled this season in his first full year as a starter, also began the second half on fire by saving 72 of 75 shots.
The Oilers are tied for 6th in the Pacific Division with the Calgary Flames, but they’ve shown flashes of a quality hockey team, and it all starts with McDavid.
With 58 points, the New York Islanders are just three points behind the New York Rangers for 2nd place in the Metropolitan Division.
Led by John Tavares and Kyle Okposo, New York is 8th in the NHL in scoring with 2.7 GPG, and the defense will get a much-needed boost with the return of Johnny Boychuk after he missed the last five weeks with an upper body injury.
Goaltender Jaroslav Halak has been superb for the Islanders this year, though his record might not indicate it. Halak has a record of just 12-10-4, but a solid GAA of 2.18 and a save percentage of .921.
The offense hasn’t helped him out much when he’s been in net, and it has showed. But what the Islanders do have in their favor is a stellar record against Western Conference opponents.
New York has owned the West this year with a mark of 13-4-2. An even more impressive stat is the team’s 10-0-2 record against the West at home, which bodes extremely well for the Islanders in this spot.
