The Connor McDavids kick-off the season in a battle of Alberta match up in Calgary, oh sorry- I meant the Edmonton Oilers.
The most exciting young talent in the league will start his push for the Art Ross trophy against a solid defensive corps in Calgary, led by captain Mark Giordano.
The problem for Calgary is, McDavid is a transcendant talent that is almost impossible to contain.
Edmonton Oilers
Connor McDavid is the biggest star prospect to join the league since Sidney Crosby did in 2005. In a injury-shortened rookie season (due to a broken collarbone), McDavid tallied 48 points in 45 games as an 18-year old.
He is already considered one of the best players in the NHL prior to his 20th birthday, and was recently named the youngest captain in NHL history, taking over that title from the aforementioned Crosby.
He leads an Edmonton squad that has unlimited firepower up front, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jordan Eberle, Leon Draisaitl, Jesse Puljujarvi and Milan Lucic rounding out the top-six.

GM Peter Chiarelli made one of the game’s most controversial trade this off-season, sending a former #1 overall pick and one of the NHL’s premier goal-scoring left wingers, Taylor Hall, to the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Adam Larsson.
While Larsson has had his ups-and-downs throughout his career, but has developed into a smooth two-way defenseman which has been Edmonton’s biggest needs in recent history, although if he doesn’t turn into a #1 D-man this trade looks bad.
Cam Talbot will look to build on a strong second half of last year, and help push the Oilers to the first playoff berth this decade.
Calgary Flames
Much like Edmonton, the Flames roster is littered with top young talent after suffering through a lengthy rebuilding process.
They hit it huge on a 5th round selection in Johnny Gaudreau and recently resigned him to a $6.75mm/year deal, as he’s developed into a mini-Patrick Kane (pun intended) and one of the game’s elite offensive players.
The 6th overall selection of Sean Monahan just a couple of drafts ago has paid dividends as he has essentially become Jonathan Toews-esque, so in a way they’ve building towards a Chicago model.
They’ve supplemented the two young stars with another in Sam Bennett, veterans such as Kris Versteeg and Troy Brouwer, both former Blackhawks.

On the backend, Calgary has acquired a collection of good defenseman in TJ Brodie, Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, Jyrki Jokipakkam and Ladislav Smid.
They somehow managed to pry Hamilton away from the Bruins for draft picks, but an established big young defenseman that can play in all situations are worth almost any picks given up.
Brian Elliot was the big off-season acquisition to stabilize the crease, and should bring a calming veteran presence behind the young team, arriving after many solid years in St. Louis.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Connor McDavid led all rookies last year in PPG with 1.06.
- Calgary won the Battle of Alberta season series 3-2 in 2015-16.
Free Edmonton Oilers vs. Calgary Flames NHL Hockey Prediction
The long storied battle of these two franchises is finally re-ignited, after the two teams went through their respective down periods.
The tantalizing young talent in this game will make for a must-watch game, as the two teams looked poised to battle for a playoff spot with one another and every head-to-head matchup will count.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
While I like the Flames defense a lot and the goaltending should be drastically improved from a year ago, the Oilers’ offense is just too good not to manage at least a couple.
On the other side, Edmonton’s defense have slowly taken a step forward but certainly is not there yet. I think this will be a close battle highlighted by the great young scorers for each.
