The Tampa Bay Lightning start their quest to defend their Eastern Conference crown on Wednesday night against the same team they defeated in round one a year ago.
The Wings and Lightning split their season series two games apiece, but there’s not splitting a playoff series.
Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings definitely staggered into the playoffs, dropping their last two games and essentially backing their way into the post season thanks to the Bruins losing their final game of the season.
Detroit coach Jeff Blashill made a strange move in their final three games, going with Jimmy Howard three straight times.
The veteran netminder got a huge shutout win over Philly which was turned out to be the difference maker, but was beat up for five goals against the Bruins in huge game, and gave up two goals in the season finale against the Rangers while facing just 17 shots.
Offense has to be a concern for the Red Wings heading into a series with a team that has a lot of speed and fire power, despite some key injuries.
The Wings have managed to score more than three goals just once in their last 10 games, and that was back on March 24 against a pretty hapless Montreal team.

They’ve also taken losses of 6-2 (vs Tampa) 7-2 (vs Pitt) and 5-2 (vs Boston) in that stretch.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Last year’s Eastern Conference champs came into the season as a favourite to repeat that accomplishment and once again contend for a Stanley Cup.
That was even true as recently as a month ago, but injuries to key players have cropped up and this team is far different than the one that knocked off the Wings in seven games a year ago.
The team’s captain and most proficient scorer Steven Stamkos is done for the season.
No worries right?
They still have that triplet line…Not so much, as Tyler Johnson is also down with an injury, and he was the team’s hero all playoffs last year.

Tampa will have to lean heavily on goalie Ben Bishop, who was by all accounts, great this year, will have to be every bit as spectacular as he was last playoffs if this team is to get out of round one.

Free Detroit Red Wings vs. Tampa Bay Lightning NHL Hockey Prediction
Based entirely on momentum, you have to like Tampa heading into game one, though the entire series may be different as it goes on.
Tampa pumped the Wings 6-2 last time they met, which was just a few weeks ago and the Red Wings limped into the playoffs not looking sharp, or playing playoff-type hockey.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Lightning -150
Tampa finds a few goals early and the crowd noise carries them past a Detroit team that hasn’t impressed of late.
