There are certainly a lot of ties between the Detroit Red Wings and the Tampa Bay Lightning, the biggest being Steve Yzerman.
Yzerman played his entire career for Detroit, captaining them to multiple Stanley Cup Championships and being regarded as one of the best leaders in the game.
He then began his front office career with the organization, being groomed until the jettisoned to Tampa Bay to become their GM, and since then has had excellent success in the role.
Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings have been in a transition time, going from Nicolas Lidstrom as captain upon Yzerman’s retirement, then to the current Henrik Zetterberg once Lidstrom hung them up.
Zetterberg has been a great player for the Wings, but it is now a roster littered with good young players that are beginning to take the passing of the proverbial torch as they lead the Wings into their next strong, contending lineup.
Dylan Larkin may be the best of the bunch, possessing great speed and skill on the wing.
Other notables include Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Riley Sheahan, Danny DeKeyser and soon to be Wing, Anthony Mantha. Veterans Frans Nielsen and Thomas Vanek join to help offset the loss of Pavol Datsyuk.

Petr Mrazek is the lead man between the pipes for the Red Wings, a solid young goalie who looks to grow along with the core.
He had a tremendous start to the year a season ago, his first as the starter, but faltered slightly later on in the year and relinquished the job to solid veteran backup, Jimmy Howard, who led the Wings to playoffs.
There are certainly question marks with the defensive group, who are led by the aging Niklas Kronwall but really lacking a true #1 D-man.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay has one of the strongest and deepest forward corps in the league, led by the likes to the re-signed Steven Stamkos.
There was much debate about where Stamkos would end up, but ultimately Yzerman didn’t blink and was able to re-sign the star forward to a team-friendly contract.
Same can be said for Nikita Kucherov, who recently inked a 3-year pact for a very team-friendly $14.3mm, another stroke of brillance by “Stevie Y” and his ability to hold steady.
Rounding out the group are Tyler Johnson, Jonathan Drouin (another great hold), Vladislav Namestnikov, Valtteri Filppula and Ondrej Palat.

Unlike Detroit, the Lightning do have a true #1 defenseman in Victor Hedman, the young Swedish phenom has established himself as a top blueliner in the entire NHL.
Goaltender, Ben Bishop, is in the final year of his contract and is due for a hefty pricetag considering how excellent he has been since joining Tampa Bay and taking over the starting role.
He is now considered one of the best in the business and was acquired for Cory Conacher, who interestingly enough is back with Tampa Bay on a two-way deal for nothing.
Andrei Vasilevskiy is a great young talent and is poised to take over the starting duties upon Bishop’s anticipated departure.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Detroit was 19-17-5 on the road last season.
- The two teams split the regular season series 2-2 last season, with each tallying both of their respective wins on home ice.
- Tampa Bay beat Detroit in playoffs last spring in a 4-1 series win.
Free Detroit Red Wings vs. Tampa Bay Lightning NHL Hockey Prediction
In a rematch of the Conference Quarterfinals from April, Detroit will be looking for revenge againat the Lightning squad that killed their Stanley Cup dream. It won’t be an easy task however, as the Tampa Bay roster is about as strong as they come.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Tampa Bay -1.5
I generally like betting the spread on NHL games as I don’t feel the empty net goal is priced in correctly.
I think this will be a close enough game, but ultimately that Tampa Bay’s depth and goaltendeing wins out in the end.
