It’s a battle of the bottom of the Eastern Conference as two teams who could find themselves in the Auston Matthews sweepstakes this summer do battle in Toronto on Wednesday.
Columbus
The Jackets have been a bit of a surprise this season, despite their pretty poor showing a year ago. Last year’s edition of the Blue Jackets was ravaged by injuries early in the season and were never really able to recover from a poor start.
The team started the 2015-16 season healthy but still have been unable to get the train moving in the right direction.
The team made a major shakeup, sending arguably their most talented forward Ryan Johansen to the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Seth Jones.

Injuries have crept back into the team though this year as they are without starting goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and captain Nick Foligno, who are both on the IR with an ankle and upper-body injury respectively.
Former Leaf David Clarkson is also out of the lineup for CBJ.
As a result, Joonas Korpisalo will man the crease for Columbus and his limited work this year hasn’t been much to brag about with a record of 1-4-1 and a 3.69 GAA and .882 SV%.
Toronto
The Leafs return home from a California road trip that went from good to bad to ugly in their three games against the Ducks, Kings and Sharks.
A 4-0 win over Anaheim opened the trip for the Leafs, but they were downed 2-1 by the Kings before getting hammered 7-0 at the hands of the Sharks.

If there’s a trait the Leafs have shown this year it’s resilience and they’ve been able to bounce back from losses quite well under Mike Babcock. This might be a little different as returning home from the west coast is always tough on teams and it’s not unusual for a squad to be sluggish when they get home.
The team will also be without top six forward James van Riemsdyk who is out long term with a foot injury. James Reimer returns to the net after a very good showing in LA where he stopped 39 of 41 shots in a losing effort.

The Jackets played a game in Brooklyn on Tuesday night against the Islanders and traveled to Toronto overnight.
The Western swing is tough on teams, but a Leafs team that has been off since Saturday should be well rested and ready for a team that they already drubbed 6-3 in Columbus this year.
