The Jets open up as slim favorites when they welcome in the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday for their home opener.
Carolina will look to build off an over .500 season last year, while the Jets just couldn’t get over the hump as they finished last in the Central Division.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Hurricanes could just never pick up enough steam to jump into the playoff race last year.
While they managed to finish 35-31-11-5, the Canes still finished 6th in the Metropolitan Division. One of the main reasons for their inability to move up the standings came from their lack of goal production.
The Hurricanes managed just 2.4 goals per game, which ranked 27th in the NHL.

They’ll rely heavily on Left Winger Jeff Skinner, who led the team with 51 points. Skinner tallied 28 goals and was a threat every time he took the ice with Jordan Staal.
Staal was right there with Skinner as he finished with 48 points (20 goals).
The duo will be asked to do a lot of the heavy lifting this year for the Hurricanes, as they didn’t acquire much in the offseason in terms of offensive sparks.
Winnipeg Jets
The Jets found themselves in the cellar of the Central Division, as they finished 35-39-5-3 on the season.
One of the main reasons behind their struggles came from their lack of defense. Winnipeg was one of the worst in terms of goals against, as they finished by allowing nearly 3 goals per game.
That number especially gets magnified as bad when they only averaged 2.6 themselves.

While the Jets are expected to rotate goalies early on, Michael Hutchinson is probable for the season opener. Hutchinson had a solid preseason that saw him hold a 1.50 GAA heading into the final tuneup.
That final tuneup didn’t go according to plan as the Jets were torched 5-1, but Hutchinson still showed the most promise.
Offensively, it’ll be Blake Wheeler who will be asked to do just as much as last season. Wheeler led the team with 78 points on 26 goals and 52 assists.

Free Carolina Hurricanes vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Hockey Prediction
The Hurricanes and Jets both had roller coaster seasons last year.
Neither team really holds an edge here, but given the Under hit 5 of 6 times last season in the series, there is no reason to assume that both offenses will struggle once again here.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Under 5
Expect limited chances, as neither offense has that spark.
