The Buffalo Sabres and Calgary Flames are both looking to improve on their abysmal seasons last year, and this early-season contest gives each of them the chance to show what the other can do.
Calgary Flames
The Flames spent a lot of money acquiring goaltender Brian Elliott and extending forward Johnny Gaurdeau, but both have been silent through the team’s first couple of games.
Elliott has surrendered 10 goals in his first two games as a member of the Flames, and he’s going to be busy all season long because Calgary’s defense is terrible.
Elliott had the privilege of playing behind a stellar defense in St. Louis, but he’s not in St. Louis anymore.

Former Sabre Chad Johnson will spell Elliott in this one as he looks to give the Flames their first win of the young season. He was phenomenal in net against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday by allowing just one goal in regulation.
Though the Flames didn’t get the win, Johnson offered them a much better performance than the first two that Elliott gave them.
Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres were dealt a terrible blow when franchise player Jack Eichel injured his leg in practice last week, but Buffalo looked perfectly fine without him when they scored six goals against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
Buffalo is in the middle of a thorough rebuild, but head coach Dan Bylsma has Stanley Cup experience to help right the ship for the boys from Western New York.

Ryan O’Reilly is tied for the team lead with four points and fellow Sabre Rasmus Ristolainen has helped out his team’s cause with a team-high four assists.
Goaltender Robin Lehner will look to keep Buffalo in postseason contention in his first full year as the starter, and if his team can score goals like they did against Edmonton, he should be in line for his fair share of wins.
The Sabres have a healthy mix of youngsters and veterans, so look for them to make things interesting in the Eastern Conference this season.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Buffalo is 1-0 on the road this season.
- Calgary has a -6 goal differential this season.
Free Buffalo Sabres vs. Calgary Flames NHL Hockey Prediction
The Sabres went on a scoring frenzy in their previous game against the Oilers, and I think they’ll put on the same clinic against the struggling Calgary Flames. The Sabres offer great value in this spot, and so look for them to take care of business again on the road.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Sabres ML
I think the Sabres will score handily against Johnson and the Flames as they notch their second road victory in as many games.
