The reigning NFC Champions sit a 1-3 on the season and lost their franchise player. QB Cam Netwon, in last week’s game to a concussion.
Kickoff is set for 5:30PM with reigning MVP, Newton, questionable for the start as he’s in the league’s concussion protocol.
The Panthers will face a fellow QB who’s former #1 overall pick, Jameis Winston, behind center for the Bucs.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Jameis Winston had a decent rookie season a year ago, throwing for 4,042 total yards and earning a passer rating of 84.2, not bad for a rookie.
He did, however, throw too many picks with 15 INT- which he has followed up this year again with an even worse mark having 8 already through four weeks.
It surprising considering Winston is top rated passer this year when under pressure, but has really struggled without.
Mike Evans is Winston’s main target, especially in the redzone as evidence by his three TDs so far through 2016.
He also leads the Bucs in receiving yards at 360 and has officially taken the crown of the #1 wideout in Tampa from the veteran, Vincent Jackson.
Doug Martin suffered an early in the year and again likely to be sidelined for the near future, so the running duties will once again be deferred to Charles Sims (barring his own health) and Jacquizz Rodgers.
The Bucs have run for four touchdowns in their four games so far.
The Tampa Bay defense has certainly not been as vaunted as they were expected to be heading into the 2016 season, ranking just 15th in total yards allowed and 31st overall in total points allowed.
They appear to have suffered a significant loss in week-4, as star tackle Gerald McCoy is unlikely to play in week-5 due to calf injury.
Cam Newton was the best QB in the league last year, but is questionable for week-5 with a concussion that was suffered in week-4.
Head coach Ron Rivera has stated on Thursday that he expects to know Cam’s status by “the end of the week.”
Last season, Cam threw for 3,837 years while adding 636 on the ground, but if he cannot play on Monday, the starting QB duties will fall onto the shoulders of veteran back-up, Derek Anderson.
Anderson has an 88.0 rating this year but threw 2 INT along with his 2 TDs in limited action after Cam got hurt.
Running back Jonathan Stewart may see an increased workload should Newton be unable to play, that is if Stewart himself can go as he’s dealing with a hamstring injury himself.
On the season, Stewart has 73 yards on 20 attempts, while Fozzy Whitaker has 141 on 27 and would play a larger role if Stewart isn’t ready. Neither have yet to record a TD.
Luke Kuechly captains a defense that was a force just a season ago, and leads the team with 46 total tackles.
However, the Panthers’ defense has struggled this season as a whole, allowing 118 points through the first four games.
The vacated presence of Josh Norman in the backfield certainly hurts.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Both teams are 1-3 and sit in the NFC South division, meaning this game could have big playoff implications
- Jameis Winston has been blitzed on 41% of his dropbacks this year, most of any QB.
- Winston has a 88.3 QB Rating when under pressure, ahead of the 2nd place Derek Carr at 82.3
- Carolina’s allowed 118 points through the first 4 weeks of 2016, compared to 71 allowed through week-4 in 2015
- Carolina went at a perfect 8-0 home last year, and is 1-1 at Bank of America Stadium this season
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Bucs ATS.
Despite liking Tampa Bay entering the year, the holes on their defense and Winston’s proprensity to throw picks leads me to like the Panthers at home here.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Tampa Bay 21 – Carolina 24
Even if Anderson starts, I think Carolina figures out a way to get it done in what would be a pick’em in all likelihood.
In this event, I think Keuchly rallies the defense and they get a DST touchdown and Anderson is competent enough to complete the W.
