Neither of these teams are going to compete for the Super Bowl this season but there are still lots of storylines heading into the final game of Week 1.
For San Francisco they are probably going to be happy to get things focused back on the field.
Kick off is set for 10:20 PM ET with it looking like Case Keenum is going to keep the seat warm for top pick Jared Goff.
The Rams have questions but at least they seem to have their act together and are the justifiable favourite.
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams may have drafted a quarterback with the top pick but this team is still going to be about defense and running the football.
That is what Jeff Fisher knows best and they are equipped to try and win that way.
So far reviews on Goff have been mixed but do not read too much into the fact that he is not slated to start the opener because this teams wants to win now.
Loved what I saw from Todd Gurley as a rookie last year – 1100 yards in just 12 starts. He is the focal point of the offense and could explode.
If the Rams are going to be a surprise contender they need the defense to get back to what it was a couple of years ago. Aaron Donald is a force in the middle but the rest of the group was not making a lot of big plays.
If the offense improves like they hope they may finally have the balance that leads to winning.
San Francisco 49ers
With the first game finally here SF can focus on the field and whether Chip Kelly can get the program pointed in the right direction.
Things will definitely be a lot different this season.
It does look like Kelly has decided on Blaine Gabbert as his quarterback. Gabbert is not the running threat we normally associate with a Kelly offense but I guess he feels he has the decision making ability for the role.
The weapons, or lack there of, surrounding him, are going to make it very difficult for the offense to be much of a threat. Kelly may have to trick people more than he did in Philly.
The defense probably has a better chance for success than the offense this season.
They drafted former Oregon Duck DeForest Buckner with their top pick and he has been slotted in the lineup right away.
Also, their linebacking corps is pretty decent with Navarro Bowman and Ahmad Brooks.
The fear is that if the offense is ineffective the defense will be out there too long to have sustained success.
At some point they are going to be just too worn down.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Los Angeles -2.5
The Rams can start their first season back in L.A. with a road win. Their strengths are known while San Francisco might not have any.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Los Angeles 24 – San Francisco 6
I am expecting to see the Rams sharper in pretty much every phase of the game in the opener. It should be an easy win for them and us.
