A pair of AFC teams on the outside looking in will square off on Sunday when the Texans visit the Dolphins in Miami.
It’s been more than a disappointing start for both teams, especially Houston who looked like a team that could challenge the Colts in the AFC South.
The Dolphins meanwhile have had troubles of their own maintaining consistency but looked dominant on the road last week, pounding the Titans by 28 points.

Action will get underway at 1:00 p.m. with some pretty high stakes as a loss for either team will mean a very steep climb to get back into the playoff picture. Dolphins can get to .500, Texans are just trying to keep the gap from growing between themselves and the Colts.
Miami
As mentioned, consistency has been a tough ask for the Dolphins this year as they came out of the gate looking rather sloppy but grinded out a pretty nice road win over the Washington Redskins.
They followed that up with a disappointing loss to the Jaguars, were manhandled by division rivals Buffalo and dropped another game to a division opponent when they were beaten by 13 at home by the Jets.
Last week however the Dolphins finally looked like the Miami Dolphins that people were expecting this year, a team that has the tools to win 10 games and perhaps grab a wild card spot.
The division is all but sealed at this point for Miami as the Patriots look unstoppable and have jumped out to a 5-o start.
So what do the Dolphins do well and how do they win this game?
For starters they have been bad on offense, save for last week’s thrashing of the Titans. Miami ranks 24th in both yards and points per game and their run game has been tame, averaging just 91.4 yards per game, good enough for 26th in the NFL.

They’ve been fairly stout on defense though, using a bend but don’t break style, giving up chunks of yards but not having it translate into a ton of points.
Miami is allowing just 22 points per game which ranks 12th in the league, but they’re allowing nearly 380 yards per game of offense with a huge chunk (141 ypg) coming on the ground, a number that ranks 31st in the NFL.
Houston does not run the ball all that well so the Dolphins shouldn’t be too worried about having to stop Alfred Blue or Chris Polk, as Arian Foster (shockingly) is still battling to stay healthy.
The Texans love to attack through the air and shutting down the league’s leading receiver in terms of yards, DeAndre Hopkins, will be priority number one for the Dolphins.
Houston Texans
Despite the absence of a true number one QB, this team has not shied away from airing the ball out and they rank sixth in the NFL in passing yards per game at nearly 300.
Brian Hoyer will be under center this week and his favourite target DeAndre Hopkins will be looking to add to what is shaping up to be a career year.
The Texans are coming off a pretty easy 31-20 victory over divisional opponent Jacksonville and this week they make a step up in competition level and are doing so on the road.
The Texans followed up their first win of the season against a pretty poor Tampa Bay team by going on the road to face a tougher team and were promptly beat down by the Atlanta Falcons.
The Dolphins don’t have the same type of offensive potency as Atlanta, but they were firing on all cylinders last week and that doesn’t bode well for a Houston team that is giving up nearly 26 points per game (21st in the NFL) despite the fact that they rank in the top half of the league in both total yards allowed and pass yards allowed per game.

This is an indicator that this team has the ability to get three and outs and stop drives from extending, but inside the red zone they’re getting beat up and can’t slam the door.
Field position will be crucial in this one as the Texans do not stop the run all that well, but have been solid against the pass thanks to a pass rush that features JJ Watt.
Keeping the Dolphins in passing situations will be important all day.
NFL Betting Trends:

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: HOU +4
The Texans, I still believe, are a better football team than Miami and despite their shortcomings at QB, have the ability to be dominant on defense.
This week against an offense that hasn’t really shown that they can put up points against a solid defensive group, the Texans will keep it close and DeAndre Hawkins’ big play ability will be the difference.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Houston 27 – Miami 20
A tough back and forth game will be settled in the third quarter when the Texans get up by 10, Dolphins’ inability to score points in a hurry leaves them just short.
