2016 New York Giants Handicapping
But the 2016 New York Giants will look to buck that trend after having a historic free agency in which they signed a group of four players to deals totaling over $200 million, and more than $110 million in guarantees.
Those players will help, but there’s no amount of money the front office wouldn’t pay to see quarterback Eli Manning take another step forward in Ben McAdoo’s offense, because he’s the player that has the ability to make good on ownership’s investment, or undo it all.
2016 Giants Roster Changes
The Giants acquired defensive end Olivier Vernon, cornerback Janoris Jenkins, defensive tackle Damon Harrison, and re-signed defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to deals totaling $203.8 million, with $113.8 million of that guaranteed.

Vernon will improve the team’s efforts against the run and in getting to the quarterback.
At just 25 years of age, his best years are still ahead of him. Jenkins is a gambler at cornerback, but brings some much-need playmaking ability to the secondary. Harrison can be the unit’s anchor against the run as a big body in the middle.
Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple was also added with the No. 10 overall pick.
2016 New York Giants Predictions: Offense
The four-headed backfield committee didn’t work last season.
The team has its sights on using Rashad Jennings as a true feature back, but if the issues on the right side of the offensive line aren’t addressed, that likely won’t matter.

The wide receiving corps, which will feature Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, and Oklahoma rookie Sterling Shepard will be one of the deeper groups in football if Cruz can stay healthy and return to form and Shepard can figure things out in a hurry.
Everything else is just window dressing if Manning regresses. He’s only gotten better working in McAdoo’s system, so it seems likely he’ll enjoy continued success.
He’s posted a QB rating north of 90 in each of the first two years under McAdoo, eclipsing 4,400 passing yards and 30 touchdowns each year.
2016 New York Giants Predictions: Defense
The team spent big money in free agency to improve its defense, and used the No. 10 overall pick to bring in a cornerback, so defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo must be feeling a lot of pressure these days.
He also has a lot of work in front of him as he gets these new players acclimated to his system.

The strength of Spagnuolo’s defense has always been line play, and the team certainly isn’t short on talent in that area after bolstering the unit with plenty of talent in the offseason.
The cornerback situation got a boost as well, but safety remains an area of concern, and they’re still thin at linebacker as well.
2016 New York Giants Analysis:
Eli Manning is 35 years old. It still feels like he’s Peyton’s little brother, but he’s entering his swan swong in the NFL.
There aren’t going to be many more opportunities for the Giants to make a run at a Super Bowl with him under center, so that likely explains the big free agent push.
There was a lot of bad luck and even more bad secondary play to blame for the team’s poor showing a year ago. With a truckload of cash thrown at the problem, the Giants are a prime bounce back candidate this season.
The division’s a little tougher to claim than most want to admit, but the Giants are going to be in the running for the division crown or possibly a wild card spot with an eye on double-digit wins.
