2016 Chiefs Roster Changes
You can’t make 2016 Kansas City Chiefs predictions without examining roster changes. The Chiefs lost QB Chase Daniel, OT Donald Stephenson, G Jeff Allen, G Ben Grubbs, DE/DT Mike DeVito, CB Sean Smith, S Husain Abdullah, S Tyvon Branch.
They have since acquired WR Rod Streater, OT Mitchell Schwartz, DE/OLB Andy Mulumba, S Stevie Brown, S Jimmy Wilson. Translation – KC will field largely the same team that made some serious headway last season.
So is this Kansas City’s year to shine in the AFC West? Let’s break it down.
2016 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions: Offense
Let’s be perfectly frank about the Chiefs offense – they will never be dynamic and they will never be a top tier unit as long as the colossally average Alex Smith is the starting Quarterback.
That said he did guide his team to a pretty good season last year and has become the quintessential game manager.
He tossed 11 TDs to wideouts last year – not great but not awful either considering he failed to connect on even one TD with a WR in 2014.
The biggest difference for Smith and the KC offense is Jeremy Maclin who caught 87 passes for 1088 yards and 8 TDs last year. He is as reliable as they come and is a legitimate weapon for Smith – one that he has never had.
Travis Kelce exists as one of the better Tight Ends in the game as well – he caught 72 passes for 875 yards and 5 TDs last year.
The problem for the Chiefs is that outside of those two guys there is very little to get excited about. It’s a good thing for…
The Chiefs running game figures to be one of the best in the game again – the return of Jamaal Charles after his October torn ACL certainly helps. Charles is one of the game’s best – he is a threat running and catching the ball.
Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware filled in admirably for Charles last year – they will provide the Chiefs with some exceptional depth in 2016.
Simply put KC will HAVE to count on a strong running game – my guess is that the rushers produce and teams will have limited answers for the KC rushers.
Another reason for my faith in the KC running game is their superb offensive line. Rookie center Mitch Morse is a Stud, Mitchell Schwartz came over from the Browns and Eric Fisher, Donald Stephenson and Jah Reid are adequate to say the least.
Protecting the QB and blocking for the running game is essential in the NFL – the Chiefs should be able to do just that!
2016 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions: Defense
One of the best all-around defenses in the NFL last season, the Chiefs return most of their pieces from that unit. Derrick Johnson and safety Eric Berry were terrific last year Berry’s return from lymphoma was both inspirational and incredible.
Berry and Husain Abdullah were a formidable duo indeed – arguably the best tandem in the game.
Too bad about Abdullah’s sudden retirement due to concussion issues. Sean Smith left via free agency as well.
Count on Justin Houston and Tamba Hali to be one of the top pass-rushing tandems in the NFL once again this year – they have been and will be a terror again. Houston is an elite talent and Hali, although he may have lost a step is still a force up front.
Dontari Poe, Jaye Howard and Allen Bailey fill out a defensive line that is an envy of most in the NFL.
The Chiefs will field a top tier defense in the NFL once again this year – a terrific compliment to an offense that won’t overwhelm many teams.
KC is a scary team folks – now if only the offense would live up to its potential!
2016 Kansas City Chiefs Analysis:
The Chiefs look like the Broncos of last year – armed with an OK offense and a superb defense. My guess is that the Chiefs get over the hump and take advantage of what is sure to be a down year for the Denver Broncos.
A 10-6 record gets it done in the West this year for KC as they head into the playoffs as a team nobody wants to play.
