But that wasn’t the way the Panthers saw things. Fast forward five months and the Panthers were in the Super Bowl following a 14-0 start, and Cam Newton was the MVP after establishing himself as the unquestioned best player in the league during the regular season.
In the playoffs, there still wasn’t anyone ready to accept the Panthers as being as good as they looked, but they held a 31-0 lead over the Seattle Seahawks, then blew out the Arizona Cardinals by 34 points in the NFC title game.
A Super Bowl win wasn’t in the cards, but what a season for Ron Rivera and the Panthers.
Still, there are doubters of the Panthers, so they’ll have to get the gang back together and try to do it all over again this season.
2016 Panthers Roster Changes
It was a very quiet offseason for the Panthers until they curiously decided to let top cornerback Josh Norman walk after franchise tagging him.
Not surprisingly, he was quickly snatched up by the Washington Redskins to a big money deal.

The loss hurts, but they have so much talent on that side of the ball that they can overcome it.
The big addition comes in the form of wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, who tore a ligament in his knee during training camp a year ago, costing him the entire 2016 season after an impressive rookie year.
He’ll be a full 12 months removed from ACL surgery come Week 1, so he should be good to go.
2016 Carolina Panthers Predictions: Offense
It’s true that a lot of Benjamin’s production in his rookie season came in garbage time, and while we should expect obnoxious receiving numbers from any Panthers pass-catcher, Benjamin is a talented asset.
His return knocks all other pass-catchers down a spot on the depth chart, improving the team overall.

Sophomore Devin Funchess could be the biggest beneficiary.
The quarterback situation is rock solid. Newton went through some lean years as he got acclimated to the league, but he’s solidified his spot among the elite at his position.
The Panthers are one of the few teams that are still running an old school type offense, with a very high volume of running plays, and a surprisingly high if not alarming number of runs from its quarterback.
The backfield trio of Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert, and Cameron Artis-Payne figure to see a lot of work on the ground again this season.
2016 Carolina Panthers Predictions: Defense
The team’s depth at cornerback took a hit with Norman’s departure. Veterans Bene Benwikere and Robert McClain lead a group that features three rookie cornerbacks. There’s so much talent around that position that one would have to figure they’ll make it work.
The linebacker position is the heart and soul of this unit.

Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis are the catalysts. Kuechly really stepped up his game in pass coverage last season, and could very well be the best middle linebacker in all of football.
2016 Carolina Panthers Analysis:
It’s a strange situation for the Panthers in 2016. Teams that make the Super Bowl don’t often return nearly the exact same roster as the one they had the year before.

A lot went right in 2014, so expecting another 14-0 start is asking a bit much, but there’s enough talent on this roster to see the Panthers make a run at 11 or 12 wins and a division title.
