Former VCU coach Shaka Smart got a big win over the weekend but this is a chance to see how VCU is doing without him.

Georgia Tech is also looking to get a win over a brand name team as they gear up for play in the ACC in the weeks to come.
VCU Rams:
Things haven’t changed that much for VCU since the departure of Smart.
They brought back a former assistant to lead the charge and are playing the same sort of style.
I am still trying to figure out if the rule changes brought in this season help a team that plays like that or not. So far this team has been probably better than expected.
They have no big time wins but all of their losses are to power programs and they have held their own losing to the likes of Duke, Wisconsin and Florida State. They are prepping to compete in the A10.

This season Melvin Johnson has taken over for Treveon Graham as the top scorer.
He is averaging almost 20ppg and for a guy that has the ball a lot he does not turn it over much. Korey Billbury, a transfer from Oral Roberts, is second on the team in scoring and leading the team in boards.
That is good but they need more from what few inside people they have. This is a matchup where their energy is going to have to overcome some those deficits inside.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets:
Tech is trying to take that next step in the ACC. It is not easy in that power packed league and as a result they really have to bank as much as they can in the non-conference.
So far the results are meh, they did beat Tennessee but they also lost to East Tennessee State.
They do have a nice duo in wing Marcus Georges-Hunt and power forward Charles Mitchell. MGH leads the team with 14.6ppg but Mitchell is right behind him at 14.5 with 13 boards per game. He is a beast and is performing like one.
One thing really holding GT back is the PG spot. Josh Heath leads the team in assists and takes care of the ball but he is averaging just 3 points a game.
Quite simply you don’t have to guard him and that is making it tough for others.

Tech is averaging 81ppg and wants to get up and down. We will see if HAVOC is able to slow them down.

Free CBB Prediction:
This is a short spread and a tough call. The talent probably leans to GT but I have just loved VCU in most underdog spots, even smalls ones like this.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: VCU ATS
I am going to predict that they are able to set the pace they want and make it really tough for GT, even on the road.
