Michigan State starts conference play undefeated and ranked as the top team in the nation. There is nowhere to go but down right.
Iowa was solid in the nonconference and would love to knock them down a peg. This is a nice opener to tune into.
Michigan State Spartans:
I am not sure MSU is a surprise but nobody predicted them to be in the role they are in right now.
What is really amazing is that they don’t appear to have skipped a beat even though they will be missing top player Denzel Valentine for the next little while. He might have been the best player in America when he went down – leading the team in scoring, rebounding and assists.
In the last game against Oakland, surprising OT victory, they got max production from the backcourt combo of Bryn Forbes and Eron Harris – 59 combined points. If they keep scoring like that this group will be fine.
Having strong guard play is part of the recipe for sustained success.
However, this group needs more from the combination of Matt Costello and Deyonta Davis. The two bigs will need to play more and contribute more if the Spartans are going to maintain that high level of play in conference.
Iowa is a good program and this season they are expected to compete in the B10 and probably earn an at large berth to the dance thanks to an experienced and relatively talented squad.
Tops in terms of talent is skinny forward Jared Uthoff, who leads in scoring and rebounding with 18/6. He is long and can get his shot off even when harrassed.
Second on the team in scoring is Peter Jok, the only other Hawkeyes averaging double-figures in points.
That is likely to change now that conference play begins because til now nobody has been logging heavy minutes. As those increase I expect a lot more out of Adam Woodbury, a pretty good post presence and PG Mike Gessell who is a savvy playmaker and range shooter.
Uthoff is not good enough to do it all on his own against this level of competition.
CBB Betting Trends:
- MSU are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 road games.
- MSU are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
- Under is 6-2 in IOWA last 8 home games.
- Under is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings in Iowa.
Free CBB Prediction:
This line says a lot about what people think of Michigan being considered the top team in the land.
