The good news for Toronto is they were able to get home court advantage back in Indiana. The bad news? Toronto were absolutely dreadful in game 4 on Saturday afternoon and they’ll need to bounce back quickly at home.
Indiana can’t be mad with the series being even at 2-2. They remain huge underdogs to win the series, but with the way the Raptors are playing, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if the Pacers eliminated Toronto in the first round.
The Pacers played better in gamed 4 than they have all series, which is worrisome if you’re a Raptors fan. Indiana won the battle on the glass for the first game this series, outrebounding Toronto 43-40 (15-11 on the offensive glass).
Indiana also received more production from players not named Paul George. George scored 19 points, but George Hill and Ian Mahinmi both scored 22 points. Mahinmi finished game 4 with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
Myles Turner was inserted into the starting line-up for game 4, but he actually struggled mightily. Turner is averaging 9.8 PPG and 5.5 RPG this series, but in game 4 he finished with 4 points (2-13 from the field) and 7 rebounds in 27 minutes.
It’s pretty clear the Pacers are becoming more comfortable in this series. They’ve shortened the bench and if they continue getting production from players like Hill, Turner and Mahinmi, they’re going to be extremely tough to eliminate.
Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan both played poorly on Saturday in Indiana. They combined to shoot 8-27 from the field (0-7 on 3-pointers) and they also combined for 9 of the team’s 17 turnovers in the game, which simply can’t happen.
Dwayne Casey has said the Raptors will live or die through the two stars, which is understandable, but they need to quickly find some consistency. DeRozan averaged 23.5 PPG during the regular season, but only 13.3 PPG in this series.
Lowry (15.5 PPG) and Jonas Valanciunas (15.0 PPG) are both averaging more points this series. DeMarre Carroll has stepped up his play, which is good news. He scored 8 points in the first two games and 29 points in the last two games.
The game plan for Tuesday night should be simple. Get Lowry and DeRozan going, win the rebounding battle and avoid the costly turnovers that have been hurting this team throughout this opening round series.
