The Spurs were able to land the biggest fish on the free agent market this past offseason, but they weren’t able to pick up a win in LaMarcus Aldridge’s first game with San Antonio, falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder by a score of 112-106.
The Spurs inked Aldridge to a four-year, $84 million contract in the offseason. In his debut with the team, he managed an unimpressive 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.
That was partially offset by Kawhi Leonard’s career-high 32 points, but it just wasn’t enough to get by the Thunder.
The Nets enter this matchup coming off a loss of their own. Brooklyn fell to the Chicago Bulls by a score of 115-100 to start its season. The team saw centers Brook Lopez and Andrea Bargnani rack up a combined 43 points, but it wasn’t enough.
The team is surely eager to get Jarrett Jack back to run the point. Brooklyn let Deron Williams leave town in the offseason, and Jack missed the opener with a hamstring injury.
The Nets would love to get the veteran back sooner rather than later as it embarks on a stretch in which it will play 11 of 15 games on the road.
San Antonio Spurs:
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was very happy with the performance of Leonard in the team’s opener.
Leonard has dealt with injuries throughout his young career, and now that he’s fully healthy, this could be his time to really shine on that team full of stars.
As for Aldridge, who the media has tabbed as the next big Spurs star, he’s going to endure some growing pains as he familiarizes himself with the team’s complicated offensive system. He hit on only 4 of 12 shots from the field.
The team’s big three of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker combined for only 29 points in the opener.
NBA Betting Trends:
The over is 8-3 in the Nets’ last 11 games after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.
The over is 8-1 in the Spurs’ last nine games following a loss.
The over is 10-2 in the Spurs’ last 12 games following an ATS loss.
Free NBA Prediction:
Expect to see some points in this one. The Nets likely won’t get the kind of scoring they did from their bigs in their opener again, but they come in knowing they’ll need to score some points against the Spurs if they hope to be in this matchup at all.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Over 203.5
As for the Spurs, they take on a Nets defense that allowed the Bulls to rack up 115 points in their opener. While the Bulls are employing a faster tempo, there’s no denying that the Spurs are the far superior offensive team of the two.
