Having the ability to pass, dribble, and shoot used to be the forte of small guards in the NBA. However, this season the NBA will turn to small and big men for this competition as they get set to show off their skills.
This will mark the first time in 14 years that the NBA Skills Competition will feature multiple non guards.
Skills Competition Odds: Isaiah Thomas (BOS) 10/3
The Boston guard has taken this season by storm.
Thomas has essentially taken over Rondo’s role in Boston as he has proven he can dish it and score it. This season, Thomas has averaged 21.5 points and an impressive 6.6 assists per game.
This competition is right up his alley as the star guard has shown the ability to thread needles with passes and has shot lights out in terms of jump shots.
Skills Competition Odds: Jordan Clarkson (LAL) 5/1
Clarkson has really taken over the main guard role for the Lakers this season.
With a solid core of rookies, Clarkson not only is asked to bring veteran leadership, he’s also asked to make clutch plays whether it be a shot or pass.
Clarkson has averaged 15.4 points per game and comes in off his best game of the season. He put up 22 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds.
Skills Competition Odds: Draymond Green (GSW) 5/1
Green has been the facilitator for the Golden State Warriors this season.
Draymond Green has proven he has an inside game, along with a 3 point shot, but he has had no problem dishing it off to Curry and Thompson.
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Green has averaged 9.5 rebounds per game to go along with 7.2 assists. This kind of competition should be right up his alley, giving him value at the 5/1 odds.
Skills Competition Odds: C.J. McCollum (POR) 5/1
McCollum has really shined in his role in Portland.
After the Trail Blazers dumped essentially their whole core in the offseason, McCollum stepped up and was asked to do a lot along side Damien Lillard.
McCollum has lived up to all the expectations as he has become a solid compliment to Lillard’s game. McCollum has put up 20.7 points to go along with 4.2 assists and 3.6 rebounds. He’s done a little bit everything for this team in the first half.
Skills Competition Odds: Anthony Davis (NOH) 8/1
This isn’t the type of competition you’d think Anthony Davis would be good at. The lanky big man is a dominant force in the paint and rarely brings the ball up.
However, if any big man has the ability to really be a ball controller, it’s Anthony Davis. He’s really done it all for the Pelicans this season as he has been the backbone to this team.
Davis could be a darkhorse in this competition as he has the speed and talent to pull off the tasks at hand.
Skills Competition Odds: DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) 17/2
Like Anthony Davis, thinking Cousins and weave his way through cones dribbling and make accurate passes into tight windows is tough to envision.
Cousins has proven to be a force down low and was without a doubt the best player in the month of January.
Still, the big man will have to get his fundamentals down, especially for the dribbling aspect as he is used to taking one or two dribbles at most when he touches the ball.
Skills Competition Odds: Karl-Anthony Towns (MIN) 10/1
The rookie has really given Minnesota a bright look at the future.
Anthony Towns averages a double double this season as he has put up 17.1 points to go along with 10.1 rebounds per game.
He’s only put up 1 assist per game, which could lead to many problems in the passing portion of this competition. Like Cousins and Davis, the dribbling portion is quite the wild card as he too only takes or two dribbles when he gets the ball in the post.
Skills Competition Odds: Replacement:Emmanuel Mudiay
Emmanuel Mudiay will replaced the injured Patrick Beverley.
Mudiay, who was the 7th pick in the 2015 NBA draft, is averaging nearly 6 assists per game and putting up 11 points per contest.
He ranks 2nd among rookies in minutes per game with 30.2 mpg.
