The Verizon NBA Slam Dunk Contest may not have the same allure as it once had, but a special young jammer named Zach LaVine did his part to officially make the competition must-see television.
This year, he’ll look to defend his title against the likes of big man Andre Drummond, forward Aaron Gordon and swingman Will Barton.

Below will describe each participant and why they each have the chance to win this years Verizon NBA 2016 Slam Dunk Contest.
Slam Dunk Contest Odds: Zach LaVine (-300)
Zach LaVine is the defending champion for a reason. That reason is on full display here.
The fact is, LaVine has all the skills necessary to be a dunk champion for years to come. He has length, athleticism and, of course, some of the springiest hops you’ll ever see.
Watching Lavine throw down, it’s clear that his specialty is going between the legs, but look for him to get more creative this year.
Three of his four dunks in last year’s showing were off the Eastbay variety, and for a guy who can look down on the rim while dunking, creativity becomes crucial when we’ve seen virtually dunk there is to see throughout the years.
Slam Dunk Contest Odds: Aaron Gordon (+400)
When Aaron Gordon first entered the league, he earned Blake Griffin comparisons from numerous scouts.
On Saturday, he has a chance to join Griffin as a Slam Dunk champion.
Gordon’s dunking style is one combined with both freakish athleticism and extreme power. He gets above the rim, and when he’s there, he shows no mercy.
In a recent Bleacher Report special submission, Gordon recapped the first time he put someone on a poster. His feelings? Sorry not sorry.
That’s exactly how he’ll feel if he takes down the favorite LaVine on Saturday.
Slam Dunk Contest Odds: Will Barton (+550)
Will Barton is about as built as a string bean, but don’t let that fool you. The guy can fly; the question is: How creative can he be with his dunks?
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Barton, originally with the Portland Trail Blazers and now a member of the Denver Nuggets, has really made a name for himself this season. He’s averaging career highs across the board, and for the first time in his career is a consistent rotation player.
The catch is that people still don’t recognize him nationally as a household name. I’ll tell you one thing that can change that.
A win in the dunk contest.
Slam Dunk Contest Odds: Andre Drummond (+850)
Unlike Barton, Andre Drummond is very much a household name. He’s a rebounding machine who racks up double-doubles on a nightly basis, and he’s a terror to get shots over on the point-preventing end.
As a dunker, Drummond isn’t afraid to put someone on a poster…or on their rear ends. He’ll knock over a defender with no regard for human life, and that’s putting it nicely.
The obstacle for Drummond will be convincing people that his dunks are as glamorous as everyone else’s in spite of his height. When Dwight Howard won the dunk contest, he had dunks that were incredible, and not just because he was a big man.
Drummond needs to do the same to stand a chance…but I have a feeling we’re going to get an uninspiring showing that’s focused more on power off the glass and less on the flash needed to win over an audience.
