Cleveland Cavaliers +275
If the Cleveland Cavaliers had been healthy during the 2015 NBA Finals, we could very well be talking about them using the phrase “defending champions” at this juncture.

With both Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving out, LeBron James proved that he was best player on the planet once again. He took it upon himself to put the entire roster on his shoulders, and he forced a Game 6 against the eventual champs, the Golden State Warriors.
If this group can stay healthy, you’re looking at a clear-cut favorite out East.
There’s still the drama surrounding Tristan Thompson and his contract to look at, but regardless of what happens, there’s no team in the league’s lesser conference that can be considered a favorite over this squad when it’s not dealing with injuries.
San Antonio Spurs +350
The San Antonio Spurs finally broke the mold of growing organically this summer, and wouldn’t you know it, they’re even better as a result.
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
San Antonio is going to be right there at the top of the conference this seasons as long as chemistry doesn’t prove to be a problem.
Golden State Warriors +500
The defending champion Golden State Warriors have one thing going against them and one thing going for them. Let’s start with the positive.
The good news for this squad is that it has essentially the same squad coming back this season as it had during its title run in 2015. You really can’t ask for much more than not adding or subtracting major pieces from a team that proved cohesion and production can combine for a championship.
The bad news (if you can really call it that) is that we don’t know how this team will react to adversity, specifically injuries.
This squad didn’t have to deal with the injury bug like most contenders did last season, which means if they aren’t as lucky in the health department this year, we have no idea how they’ll bounce back.
Oklahoma City Thunder +850
Unlike the Warriors, the Oklahoma City Thunder dealt with plenty of injuries last season. They missed the playoffs, finishing in the ninth spot in a very competitive Western Conference, but they will ideally have the Big Three of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka back in 2015-16.
Los Angeles Clippers +900
The Los Angeles Clippers have done what many people thought they couldn’t do: They’ve gotten deeper.
A shallow roster was this team’s demise last season. The return of DeAndre Jordan is big-time news for this contender, but the additions of Paul Pierce, Lance Stephenson and Josh Smith are what should truly pay dividends in the 2016 title chase.
Houston Rockets +1600
James Harden has recently claimed that he not only should have been the 2015 MVP, but that he’s the best player on the planet. His first claim isn’t too far off; his second claim seems to be disregarding the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis.
Regardless, Harden is an MVP candidate, and the Rockets stand a chance as long as he’s on the floor.
Clutch City will be hoping for a healthy Dwight Howard this season, and if they get their wish, they’ll have one of the best one-two punches in the league — not to mention a point guard looking to prove his worth in Ty Lawson.
Chicago Bulls +1600
The Chicago Bulls have the seventh-best odds at winning an NBA title at this point in the process, yet they’re just the second team from out East to be named a top-10 contender.
If Chicago can stay healthy, it has a chance to compete with Cleveland. However, there are bigger things at play here, such as Fred Hoiberg’s ability to coach in his first season out of Iowa State, the rumored riff between Jimmy Butler and Derrick Rose and whether or not bigs such as Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson will be on the roster beyond this year’s trade deadline.
Miami Heat +2000
Consider the Miami Heat to be a sleeper this season.
Although being a top-10 team in terms of championship odds may not scream “traditional sleeper,” this group has a lot of question marks in its recovery during the post-LeBron era.
That said, Chris Bosh has recovered from a freak blood clot that kept him out much of last season, Justise Winslow is considered the steal of the draft and quite frankly, the Eastern Conference isn’t going to find many teams with this much talent to compete with the Bulls and Cavs late in the year.
Memphis Grizzlies +3300
The Memphis Grizzlies are known for their grit and their grind, and despite their old-school style of play, they’re going to be contenders once again in a brutal Western Conference.
[dfads params=’groups=230&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Expect this group to be a sleeper most of the year. Their style isn’t going to attract much attention with the lack of a true superstar, but attention doesn’t equate to wins — and this group should get plenty of victories by the time the year comes to a close.
Atlanta Hawks +5000
The Atlanta Hawks are a top-10 franchise in terms of title odds, but if you ask me (which you are simply by reading), this is not a safe bet. The Hawks overachieved last season, and it also took full advantage of teams that were down in the health department.
From an entertainment standpoint, this group is going to be fun to watch. However, they’re looking like they could finish anywhere from third to about sixth or seventh out East if the rest of the conference takes even a paltry step forward this season.
