The following is a look at my top favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday night’s race at Darlington based on betting odds provided by MyBookie.
2016 NASCAR Bojangles’ Southern 500 Odds: The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)
Carl Edwards remains one of the most consistent Sprint Cup drivers this season.
He has 15 Top 10 finishes through the first 24 point race events on the schedule and on the strength of his back-to-back victories at Bristol and Richmond early in the season he has long since locked up a spot in the Chase.
His betting odds to win this Sunday night have been set at +800 as one of two third-favorites in the field and I really like the value in those odds.
Racing the No. 19 Toyota, Edwards comes into this event as the defending champ at Darlington and he has been able to finish seventh or better in four of his last five Sprint Cup races at this track.
2016 NASCAR Bojangles’ Southern 500 Odds: The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)
I went with Jimmie Johnson as last week’s top contender at +1200 odds and he gave me some hope of cashing in with a sixth-place finish at Michigan.
This followed a seventh-place run at Bristol the week before so the No. 48 Chevrolet is definitely moving in the right direction in search of another Sprint Cup title.

Given Johnson’s past track record at Darlington with three career victories and an average finishing position of 9.1 coupled with some attractive +1300 betting odds to win, I am rolling the dice on him again as my top contender to win this race.
2016 NASCAR Bojangles’ Southern 500 Odds: The Longshot(odds 20/1 or greater)
Both Kurt Busch and Chase Elliott has been listed at +1650 odds to win and things really drop off from there with Tony Stewart next on the list at +5500.
Stewart would not be all that bad of a play given some of his success this season, but I decided to really go out on a limb this week with a play on Kasey Kahne’s +6600 odds to win.
He was always one of my favorite NASCAR drivers, but he has clearly fallen out of the upper tier in the Sprint Cup series over the past few seasons.
None the less, the No. 4 Chevrolet is clinging to the No. 16 spot in the current standings based on total points and the only way to guarantee a spot in the Chase is to win this week or next week at Richmond.
