The 2016 run to the Sprint Cup title got underway in spectacular form with Denny Hamlin’s photo-finish victory over Martin Truex Jr. in last Sunday’s Daytona 500 with 2015 champion Kyle Busch rounding out the top three.
For anyone keeping score, I had Hamlin as my top-valued contender in that race at +1200 betting odds.
The following is a look at my top favorite, contender and longshot to win this Sunday’s race based on betting odds provided by Bovada.
NASCAR Quiktrip 500 Odds: The Favorite (odd of less than 10/1)
Both Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano come into this race with better odds to win (+500), but I am going with the extra value in Jimmie Johnson’s +700 to successfully defend his 2015 Quik Trip 500 title.
The No. 48 car faded to 16th in last Sunday’s Daytona 500, but I am still encouraged by the fact that this team led that race for 18 laps.

Johnson started his run of five checkered flags last season with the victory at Atlanta and over the course of his career he has won a Sprint Cup point race here four times.
NASCAR Quiktrip 500 Odds: The Contender (odds from 10/1 to 19/1)
I may be stretching the value in this week’s top contender category a bit thin with a play on Dale Earnhardt Jr. at +1800 betting odds, but up until his self-imposed wreck at Daytona he was in excellent position to win last week’s race after closing as the favorite.
Atlanta is not Daytona and it has definitely not been one of Dale Jr.’s favorite tracks over the course of his Sprint Cup career, but along with the motivation for a much better showing this Sunday, the fact that he did finish third here in 2015 adds some value to these odds.
NASCAR Quiktrip 500 Odds: The Longshot (odds 20/1 or greater)
My pick in this category could be considered another reach with Kyle Larson at +2500 odds as my top pick. However, in defense of this pick I think that some of the young guns in the Sprint Cup series are primed to make some early noise this year.

Behind the wheel of the No. 45 Chevrolet, Larson was right in the mix at Daytona with a seventh-place finish.
Considering that he only placed in the Top 5 in two races last year, I see this as a step in the right direction.
This is just his third full-time season running the Sprint Cup series and he did start his rookie year with a Top 10 finish in this race.
