The NL East will kick things off on Monday with a matchup of two teams with heading in vastly different directions.
The Nationals, coming off a disappointing season in which they missed the playoffs and had some notable clubhouse meltdowns, appear to once again be an on-paper contender for the World Series.
The Braves, on the other hand, should challenge for baseball’s worst record this season as they are openly in the midst of a full scale rebuild.
The Nationals dominated the head-to-head record last season, winning 14 of 19 meetings. A total that they could arguably improve upon this season.
Washington Nationals
Any case you can make for the Nationals as a contender begins with their fearsome rotation.
They boast arguably the best 1-2 punch in the league with Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. The former finished last season with a video game-like 0.92 WHIP over 228 innings, and the later is in a contract season and should have about 200 million reasons to dominate this year.
This group is rounded out by the steady veteran presence of Gio Gonzalez and an impressive sophomore in Joe Ross.
While they did take some hits on the mound by losing Jordan Zimmerman and Drew Storen, they made some great strides in improving their lineup.
Most notably, the offseason saw the addition of leadoff hitter Ben Revere (a former NL hits leader) and World Series Hero Daniel Murphy to play CF and 2B respectively.

After a historic season for his age, Bryce Harper appears to have the support necessary to make this a fearsome group for opposing pitchers to navigate.
If the Nats can get bounce back seasons from Anthony Rendon, Jayson Werth, or Ryan Zimmerman they should have no problem challenging the Mets for the division crown.
Atlanta Braves
It wasn’t long ago that the Braves were the envy of most GM’s in the NL. They had a talented young core in place consisting of Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, Craig Kimbrel, Andrelton Simmons, Julio Teheran, Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurjjens and Mike Minor, all on rookie contracts.
Fast forward to opening day of 2016 and all that remain are Freeman and Teheran, who is coming off a wildly disappointing season.
Their pitchers began to succumb to injury and ineffectiveness and the front office began selling off whatever they could to start over. Consequently, the Braves are just not going to be a good baseball team this season.
Their current roster is littered with re-treads like Kelly Johnson, Drew Stubbs, Erick Aybar and Gordan Beckham, or young players with limited ceilings like Adonis Garcia and Jace Peterson.

Their strength lies in their farm system, but there is very little MLB ready talent to count on this season.
If Monday’s starter, Julio Teheran, can produce at his 2014 pace (2.89 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) as opposed to last season’s version (4.04 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) then they can at least bank on one arm to get them some W’s.
The rest of the rotation would be lucky if they could hit double digit wins this season, as Bud Norris, Williams Perez and Matt Wisler aren’t striking fear into many opposing teams.
Make no mistake, this Braves team could be VERY good…. In 2019. This year though, should be a tank fest with the ideal outcome landing a blue chip prospect at the top of the draft.

Free Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
This one should be a no-brainer. I’d love to think the scrappy Braves could muster up the gusto to win the home opener for their fans but there is no realistic scenario in which that happens.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: UNDER the Number
Take your pick at any position on the diamond, except for first base, and the Nationals have a better player than the Braves.
Give me the dominance of Max Scherzer and Bryce Harper on the road in a lopsided win where the Braves struggle to score even a pair of runs on the day. Lock it in for the Nationals.
