The Toronto Blue Jays, who are coming off a red-hot July, travel down south to Houston to face an Astros team that is more than alive in the American League Wild Card picture.
Toronto Blue Jays
With their pitching intact and their bats back in action, the Blue Jays find themselves atop the AL East as July comes to a close.
It’s the first time since the season’s first week that the Jays have been on top of the division.
Led by the usual suspects Jose Bautista, Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion, Toronto is top-five in runs, OBP, slugging and home runs.
Everybody knows the Blue Jays for their bats, but the pitching has been the bigger story for them this season.

One of those guys has been Marcus Stroman who comes in with an 8-4 record and a 4.92 ERA. As you can tell from the quality record with the high ERA, Stroman has been the beneficiary of a great deal of run support.
Opposing batters are hitting him for a .273 average this season and he comes in with a 4.81 road ERA.
He’s also won his last two starts where the Jays have averaged 8.5 runs per game.
Houston Astros
If Dallas Keuchel could somehow find the form that earned him last year’s AL Cy Young, then the Astros could very well be way ahead in the Wild Card standings.
Unfortunately, Keuchel has been a disaster and Houston is out of Wild Card consideration at the moment. Despite Keuchel’s struggles, the Astros rank in the top-10 in ERA, WHIP, K/9 and home runs allowed.
Doug Fister has been a huge part of that success on the mound and he’ll try for his 11th win of the year as the counters Stroman and the red-hot Jays.

Fister is 10-7 with a 3.73 ERA but was roughed up for six earned runs in his previous start.
He’s not going to blow you away or strike you out a bunch, but the veteran Fister has been pretty reliable when the Astros have needed him.
He’s surprisingly pitched better on the road with an ERA that’s 1.50 less when he’s not at Minute Maid Park.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- Blue Jays are 16-6 in their last 22 games.
- Blue Jays are 3-5 in Marcus Stroman’s last eight road starts.
- Over is 3-0 in Stroman’s last three starts.
- Astros are 2-4 in Doug Fister’s last six starts.
- Astros are 32-21 at home.
Free Toronto Blue Jays vs. Houston Astros MLB Prediction:
The Blue Jays are clicking at the right time and the Astros are right in the thick of the Wild Card hunt.
This game could go either way because the Astros have been dominant at home while the Blue Jays have done pretty well on the road. Despite who wins this game, the total is sure to go over the mark.
I’ll take the Astros for the win, but it’ll be far from a pitchers’ duel.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Over 8.5
Both pitchers have struggled in their respective situations, so I’m going with the over.
MLB Free Score Prediction: Houston 7-6
