It was just one season ago where San Diego made huge offseason splashes acquiring Matt Kemp, Justin Upton, Craig Kimbrel and other big name players in an attempt to put together an instant contender.
This flopped miserably and now many of those names are gone as they attempt to re-structure their squad on the fly.
Two key signees from this past winter will take the mound against each other, as both Johnny Cueto and Drew Pomeranz look to build upon their strong starts.
San Francisco Giants
Johnny Cueto was a key signing for the perennial contender, the San Francisco Giants, this past off-season.
It appears to be paying dividends, as Cueto has looked every bit of a $20-million/ year pitcher so far. He has compiled a 5-1 record with a 2.97 ERA and 53 K on the young season.
There were some worries that the arm issues that nagged Cueto would turn this signing into a high risk proposition, though so far Cueto has given Giants fans nothing to worry about.
The Giants currently rank 6th in the league in runs scored and carry a solid collective .262 batting average as a team.
They will face lefty Drew Pomeranz, who has put together a nice season but faces a difficult test against a Giants team that has hit .281 against lefties in 469 at bats.
Hitters Brandon Belt and Buster Posey have both actually put up better numbers against lefties this year, with each sporting a .325 average respectively.
Likewise for Joe Panik, who has a .333 average vs LHP and 7 of his 18 RBIs against southpaws.
San Diego Padres
The Padres send Drew Pomeranz to the hill, the once top prospect who fell out of favor in Colorado and Oakland and was wisely signed by the rebuilding Padres this off season on the cheap.
Pomeranz has put together a breakout season with a 1.80 ERA and 51 K, easily the best start to a season of his young career so far.
As mentioned, he’ll face a tough test in the Giants who are tough on opposing lefties, though he does have the comfort of a home start in the pitcher-friendly Petco Park.
The San Diego offense ranks near the bottom in most hitting categories, namely 24th in runs scored with 144 and 28th in average at .232.
It won’t get any easier for them in this one, as they face a tough chucker in Cueto.
There’s very little depth to the Padres’ lineup beyond Matt Kemp and Wil Myers, aside from maybe the resurgent Melvin Upton Jr. (or the artist formerly know as BJ Upton).
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- the Padres are 5-5 in their last 10
- San Diego is hitting just .227 against RHP
- Padres are 8-11 at home this year
- San Francisco leads the MLB in Runs vs LHP and is 4th in BA vs LHP.
- the Giants are 3-0 vs San Diego this year
Free Tampa Bay Rays vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Prediction:
The edge goes to the Giants on offense, and while both are sending quality starter to the mound, the Giants have crushed LHP this year.
