The Padres were hoping a less is more approach might yield better results this season but so far that has not been the case. They are far from an offensive force once again and the pitching they have relied upon lately has been absent. San Francisco also has been scuffling along but their track record for performance dwarfs that of the Padres.
San Diego Padres
Even though big bats like Matt Kemp and Wil Myers are producing the Padres are still one of the worst offensive teams in the Majors. Alexei Ramirez has struggled to adapt to the National League and they are getting zero from catcher Derek Norris. There is not enough production spread out for this group to have a third of the lineup not contributing.
The best shot the Padres have is if their pitching gets a lot better and that includes getting more from Andrew Cashner. After a couple of mediocre starts to kickoff the year year he has been much better in his last two giving up just a solo run in each.
He has to pitch deeper in games though because the bullpen is getting torched to the tune of an ERA of 5.53. Only the Brewers meagre crew have a batting average against worse than the Padres .286. This club can’t afford to be coughing up the few leads they have.
San Francisco Giants
I think the fans are wondering when all that every other year magic is going to come into effect. This team loaded up on pitching this offseason but so far the offense has been way better – they are 6th in runs scored. The lineup lacks that true elite threat – yes I like Buster Posey too but he is not a real power threat – yet it is solid from top to bottom. Angel Pagan is having a great start and Hunter Pence is as well. . There are few easy outs.
In the early going Samardzija is leading the team in ERA. He is pitching good but not great but if he is the third best guy on your staff than you are in good shape. He has yet to give up more than 3ER in any start this season so the consistency has been there.
The Giants bullpen has not be the tire fire like San Diego but it has not been overly sharp either. They are in the bottom third in most key metrics.

Free San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants MLB Prediction:
If you are going to back the Padres you have to believe you are getting the best of it on the mound and I just don’t feel that on the road against Samardzija. Cashner starts strong generally but he has been hit hard by the Giants over his career. He has never won a game at AT&T Park and has an ERA close t0 7 there. That tells you all you need to know.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: San Francisco ML
With the numbers above you are probably not going to get much value with the Giants here – maybe -140. I would look to pair it with an over for a better payoff.
