Philadelphia Phillies (53-80) vs. New York Mets (73-59)
Date: Wednesday September 2
Time: 7:10 PM
Venue: Citi Field – Queens, New York
MLB Betting Lines: New York -255, Philadelphia +232
MLB Betting Total: 7
Probable Pitchers: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (5-1, 3.26 ERA) vs. Mets RH Matt Harvey (11-7, 2.48)
The Mets will look to extend their lead in the NL West with the Phillies in town.
Just because they have a nice cushion doesn’t mean this team can coast.
The Phillies are a bad team. They have been in last place all season and their future is not all that bright. However, in the second half of the year they have been much more respectable, showing a little big of fight from time to time.
With his monster contract Ryan Howard is the lone holdover from the glory days. He has 21 homers this season but like so many others has struggled against Mets starter Matt Harvey.
Philly starter Aaron Nola has been a pleasant surprise this season.
He has somehow cobbled together a 5-1 record and his peripherals are pretty good too. Even though this is just his ninth start of the season he can tie departed Cole Hamels for the team lead in victories with 6.
He has yet to face the Mets this season which could be an advantage. He also hasn’t lost a road start.
Still don’t get too excited, it may be that the Phillies just have a chance at a sweet payoff.
New York Mets
I never would have thought it could happen but it looks like the Mets could be on cruise control. They have a nice lead in the NL East and addressed their issues with some additional lumber.
Only twice in the last ten games have they scored less than 4 runs and with an ERA of 3.36 (4th) that is going to be a target number for this group.
Now it is time for David Wright to prove that he still has it. He hit a homer in his first AB back but has not driven in a run in the 6 games since – though he is getting his hits.
Few teams have ace level starters like New York.
Before checking the stats I thought Matt Harvey was having just a “good” season but I guess it has been better than that (if not quite as good as Jacob deGrom’s).
He is sizzling right now having only given up a run in two of his last five starts. With a ratio of 33-2, strikeouts to walks.
The problems is that he has been too good to make any money off of. In only one of those starts has be been less than a -160 favourite.

4* MLB Betting Prediction: Mets -255 but play the Mets on the Run Line
The Mets should get back to winning and dump Philly tonight. You have to take the run-line though, no value on the ML really.
MLB Baseball Score Prediction: New York 6 – Philadelphia 2
Backing the Phils would have a sweet payoff but it would truly be gambling.
