It was expected the Twins would be a struggle this year, but the Astros struggles have been a confusing thing.
The two teams have split the first two games and will play in the rubber match of their 3 game set on Wednesday.
Minnesota took the series opener against Dallas Keuchel, but couldn’t string together runs against Colin McHugh. The Twins fell once again to send their record to 8-19 on the season.
While it’s early, the Twins have built quite the hole for themselves. They now sit 11.0 games back of the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.
Minnesota can blame their road record for a big part of that, as they are just 2-10 on the road this season.
Trying to capture their first road series, the Twins will send out RH Phil Hughes. The RH is just 1-4 on the year and sits with an ERA of 4.45. Hughes has factored in all 5 of his starts, as he’s dropped back to back games to the Nationals and Tigers. Hughes has reached the 7th inning just 1 time over the 5 starts.
Houston is right there record wise with the Twins, but they have the fortune division they’re dealing with right now.
The Astros are just 6.0 games back despite their 9-18 record. They have had trouble with their pitching, giving up 5.0 runs per game. This rotation was one of the deepest in baseball last year and they can’t plan on going too far unless they get LH Dallas Keuchel going. He seemed to boost the rotation last year as the other starters fed off of him.
Trying to feed off McHugh’s start, the Astros will send out RH Mike Fiers. He’s turned in 3 solid starts, but was on the tough end of a ND last start, going 7.0 innings allowing 7 hits with 2 runs.
All three of Fiers’ decisions have came at home this season.

The Astros are eventually going to get hot. This team is too good and with a rubber match here against the lowly Twins, look for Fiers to really turn in a solid outing.
