Houston has struggled to carry forward any of the momentum from last season. Heading into the weekend they have dug a significant early hole for themselves and starting to get out of it on the road at Fenway Park is far from ideal.
Boston is currently neck and neck with Baltimore atop the AL East standings despite some underwhelming performances from key players.
Last year the Astros slugged their way to one of the most prolific offenses in the game. This season they are eighth in homers but runs have been harder to come by, they are 20th.
Add that to subpar pitching and it is easy to see why they are struggling. One guy who isn’t is second baseman Jose Altuve.
He is batting .326 and leading the club in homers with 9. He also leads the Majors in steals and is the rare Astro who does not strike out a ton.
The only thing Collin McHugh has going for them is that his 5.50 ERA is not the worst among the starting group.
Hopefully he is righting the ship coming off a very good outing in a midweek win over the Mariners.
He probably won’t get to 19 wins like he did this season unless he starts pitching a lot better. His road ERA is over 11.
I am not making that up and their bullpen is leaky right now.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox are jockeying with the Orioles at the top of the AL East.
They have the second best offense in the league with David Ortiz showing little age in his retirement year. An amazing 6 regulars have batting averages over .300 heading into the weekend.
Ortiz is still the top power threat but they can get a homer from pretty much anywhere in the lineup.
The bats may cool but hopefully the pitching will be better by then. Also, Boston is second in steals. When has that ever happened.
It is the pitching that has been in question for the Sox this season. Buchholz has an ERA of 5.90 heading into this one and like McHugh, his only salvation is that the ace of the team has an even higher one.
I have never been a fan because he has trouble missing bats. His ratios are terrible this season. The bullpen has the potential to be really good but right now they are more average.

Free Houston Astros vs Boston Red MLB Prediction:
The Sox are definitely playing better ball this season. The way they are hitting I am sure they are excited for the Astros to come to town so they can stay nice and sharp.
The Astros bats are no slouch either so the total might be the way to go at this one. As long as it is not too crazy high like double digits. 9.5 or below and it is a nice value.
4* Free MLB Betting Pick: Over
The line will get posted on Friday night after the first game of the series in the books but either way I think the total is the way to go. No need to overthink it.
