The odds to win the National League are out and to nobody’s surprise, the youngest and possibly the most exciting team, the Cubs is the betting favorite.
Some other clubs will have something to say about it however – the Giants added two quality starters and the Mets will return one of the most impressive pitching staffs in the game today.
So who should we throw our money behind in 2016? To me it absolutely has to be one of the favorites. Let’s take a look.
2016 NATIONAL LEAGUE Championship Futures
Odds To Win NL Pennant – Chicago Cubs +225
The Cubs will be chasing their first pennant since 1945 this year and look to be in decent position to accomplish that goal. Jake Arrieta, John Lackey, and Jon Lester at the top of the rotation are impressive indeed – each had an ERA of under 3.50 last year.

Names like Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler, Addison Russell, Anthony Rizzo and newcomers Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist will make up one of the best offenses in the NL as well.
The Cubs should win the NL Central – there is zero reason why they won’t and once in the playoffs the deep pitching staff has a chance to take this team over the top for sure.
Odds To Win NL Pennant – San Francisco Giants +550
The Giants went out and got Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija and Denard Span this past offseason – two quality starters and a stud position player. Not bad work for a team that has won the World Series twice in the last five years – on even-numbered years which 2016 is.
Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Matt Cain and Jake Peavy make up perhaps the best starting rotation in the NL – the offense on paper looks average however.

But as we’ve seen pitching wins championships. I think the Giants win the NL West and once there pose a serious threat. I do like the Cubs a little bit more as a top-to-bottom better club this year however.
Odds To Win NL Pennant – Los Angeles Dodgers +550
The defending 3-time NL West Champion Dodgers lost Zach Greinke who bolted to division rival Arizona, Manager Don Mattingly, SS Jimmy Rollins, RP Jim Johnson, RP Juan Nicasio and RP Joel Peralta – ouch!
And replaced them with Scott Kazmir?
Clayton Kershaw still exists as one, if not the best pitcher on the planet and the Dodgers will certainly be one of the biggest players on the trade market as they always are but I’m not sure they are even the best team within their own division.
Because of that I’m staying away from LA and first-year Manager Dave Roberts.
Odds To Win NL Pennant – New York Mets +550
Any team that boasts a starting rotation that includes RHP Jacob deGrom, RHP Matt Harvey and RHP Noah Syndegaard is on my radar for sure!
This team represented the NL in the World Series last year and will only benefit from that experience. That said the lineup is another year older – ancient in terms of the teams they will have to beat for the pennant this year.
While I love the direction the Mets are going I can’t help but think that they are still another year away from serious contentions. Simply put there are more enticing teams out there.
Odds To Win NL Pennant – Washington Nationals +650
Veteran Manager Dusty Baker should be able to tame the circus that the Nationals became last season and Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper could carry this team all by themselves!
A pitching staff featuring Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez should be competitive – the only issue is that the Nats have better teams within their own Division and the National League.
Odds To Win NL Pennant – Pittsburgh Pirates +1100
The Pirates are a nice team but they lost more than they added this past offseason – notably second basemen Neil Walker, first baseman, Pedro Alvarez, and pitchers A.J. Burnett, Charlie Morton, and J.A. Happ.
A reluctance to plug those holes with big names could cost them. After all if they couldn’t win with last year’s roster it is hard to imagine them taking the next step with this one.
Odds To Win NL Pennant – St. Louis Cardinals +1100
The Cardinals are always a contender – their organization demands so.
They lost John Lackey and his 2.77 ERA and Jason Heyward who hit .297 last year to their Division rival Cubs in the offseason which creates two large holes on the team.
[dfads params=’groups=213&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
But Adam Wainwright who missed most of last season with an Achilles injury should be back to full health and the organizational depth will inevitably find some talent to plug the holes.
I expect St. Louis to be competitive but to fall short of an NL Championship this year.
