The NL West was perhaps the division that underwent the biggest makeover in the offseason – the Giants, the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks all made serious moves in order to outlast each other atop what could be the most competitive division in baseball.
So who wins the National League West Division and puts themselves in a good position to get that coveted World Series ring?
It looks like a three team race right now – let’s take a look.
San Francisco Giants NL West Predictions
Giants Division Odds: +125
Giants Win Total Odds: 90
Perhaps no team in the division did more to improve themselves this offseason than the Giants who acquired two starting pitchers and a stud outfielder during the winter – Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija and Denard Span make this team formidable to say the least.
The loss of SP Tim Lincecum, SP Ryan Vogelsong, SP Mike Leake, SP Tim Hudson, RP Jeremy Affeldt, RP Yusmeiro Petit, OF Nori Aoki and OF Marlon Byrd could loom large for this team but my money is on the replacements to more than do their part to make the Giants successful.

Madison Bumgarner, Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Matt Cain and Jake Peavy make up a very juicy starting pitching staff indeed. The lineup seems to be at least on par with the rest of the teams in the division as well.
Pitching however will carry this team to an NL West title – after all it is an even-numbered year – when the Giants seem to shine!
Los Angeles Dodgers NL West Predictions
Giants Division Odds: +150
Giants Win Total Odds: 87
The defending 3-time NL West Champion Dodgers had by most accounts one of the worst offseasons of any team that they will be locking horns with this upcoming season.
Zach Greinke bolted to division rival Arizona, Manager Don Mattingly departed, SS Jimmy Rollins, RP Jim Johnson, RP Juan Nicasio and RP Joel Peralta all left the perennial contender. Scott Kazmir was signed to replace Greinke, Dave Roberts will manage the club and a host of role players were added to make this team better.
The question remains – did the offseason acquisitions mitigate the enormous losses?
Clayton Kershaw makes the Dodgers a contender all by himself.
He has three Cy Young awards and has an ERA of 2.11 the last four years and has allowed opposing hitters a .198 batting average over that span. The problem is that the rotation is a tad thin after Kershaw.
You can bet that LA will make their patented moves at the trade deadline to bolster the team – almost nobody spends money like they do. That said the Dodgers look like a second place team on paper – under first year manager my guess is that their string of playoff appearances ends this season.

There are better teams in the NL West right now – it’s been a while since we said that!
Arizona Diamondbacks NL West Predictions
Diamondbacks Division Odds: +300
Diamondbacks Win Total Odds: 84 ½
The Diamondbacks lured the biggest free agent fish in the pond to their park – Zach Greinke should make a huge difference for a young and talented team that could be poised to take the next step.
This team scored the second most runs in the NL last year – with a bolstered pitching staff they could make some noise!
Arizona has some interesting pieces in place – that’s for sure. All the years of losing and trading their studs for prospects is really starting to pay off. But with a youngish roster and with some quality veteran competition within their own division, I am not ready to crown the Diamondbacks quite yet.
They will improve for sure but still look to be a year or two away from a playoff spot.
San Diego Padres NL West Predictions
Padres Division Odds: +1200
Padres Win Total Odds: 74
The offseason losses include OF Justin Upton, RP Craig Kimbrel, SP Ian Kennedy, RP Joaquin Benoit, IF Jedd Gyorko, 1B Yonder Alonso, P Odrisamer Despaigne, RP Shawn Kelley, managers Bud Black and Pat Kennedy while the additions include OF Jon Jay, C Christian Bethancourt, SS Alexei Ramirez, RP Fernando Rodney, Manager Andy Green.
Not great for a team that was 74-88 last year.
San Diego was 28th in the Majors last season in offense – they didn’t improve all that much in the offseason and the pitching staff, on paper, looks average at best.
It all adds up to another fourth place finish in the NL West for San Diego – the teams around them got better and they did not!
Colorado Rockies NL West Predictions
Rockies Division Odds: +5000
Rockies Win Total Odds: 68 ½
The Rockies went 74-88 last season and face the real possibility of going into the season without Jose Reyes who they traded Troy Tulowitzki for last year. So turmoil has been added to the misfortunes of a club that just can’t seem to find a winning formula.
[dfads params=’groups=213&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The pitching will struggle in the thin air of Coors Field and the offense, outside of Carlos Gonzalez will struggle again.
The Rockies did little to improve this past offseason – that’s a huge problem and why Colorado will be at the bottom of the NL West once again.
