Odds: Bovada
Looking for 2016 Breeders Cup Free Picks? Breeders’ Cup Weekend – the best on the horse racing calendar kicks off Friday with four G1 races at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The headliner is the Distaff – it pits three Eclipse Award winners.
The BC Juvenile Turf, the BC Dirt Mile and the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf will also be contested on a great day of racing. Let’s take a look at all four races on the schedule and what should play out in each.
Grade 1 BC Distaff
The $2 million Grade 1 BC Distaff features 5-2 co-second choice Stellar Wind, Beholder, who will also be sent off at 5-2 and 6-5 favorite Songbird – they are clearly the class of the field – period.
Stellar Wind has beaten Beholder in their last two head-to head races and Songbird is undefeated in her career – 11 starts!
To me this looks like scorching Stellar Wind’s race to lose – she has five wins and a second in her career here and has beaten everyone ever thrown at her.

The sensational Songbird loses for the first time here but finishes second with Beholder claiming third – easy. If you are looking for a sleeper – Unbridled Forever at 12-1 is your best shot.
Grade 1 BC Juvenile Turf
The Grade 1 BC Juvenile Turf will have a full field of 14 of two year olds as they chase the winner’s share of the $1 million purse. The favorite here is Oscar Performance at 4-1 odds.
Bill Mott trained Good Samaritan looms as the 9-2 second choice with Intelligence Cross looming at 6-1 as well.
This race is a bit of a wildcard but I like Good Samaritan at 9-2 in this one – he hasn’t been touched so far and something tells me he’s on to something special.
I’m taking Aidan O’Brien trained European invader Intelligence Cross to get second. I like Big Score at 10-1 who won a minor stakes race on this track last time out to get third with Oscar Performance claiming fourth.
A decent longshot is Keep Quiet at 12-1 odds. He has improved every time out and enters off a graded stakes score.
Grade 1 Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile
The Grade 1 Las Vegas Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile is next on the Friday schedule. , A world-class group of horses three years old and upward have been assembled to go one mile on Santa Anita’s dirt track for a purse of $1 million.
The favorite is Dortmund at 6-5 odds – he will be happy not to see California Chrome in this one. Dortmund has finished behind the Horse of the Year in most of his career starts.
He now has eight wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 13 career starts and should finally find some room Friday. I have always been a fan of Gun Runner – I think he runs well and finsihes second at 9-2 odds.

Vyjack who will be sent off at 10-1 odds is an interesting longshot – he has two wins and two seconds in his last four starts overall and won a G2 stakes on this track last time out.
Take Dortmund Gun Runner and Vyjack to take the show spots with 3-1 second choice Runhappy getting fourth.
Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
The Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is also on the Friday schedule at Santa Anita. Two year old fillies will take to Santa Anita’s turf track and race one mile searching for the winner’s portion of the $1 million purse. A wide open group of 14 plus two Alternate Entries is set to go.
This looks like a race that belongs to the European Invaders – four of the top 5 betting favorites are from overseas. I am going with the 4-1 betting favorite in this one – Aidan O’Brien trained Roly Poly.
She has two wins and two seconds in her last four starts – all huge races in Britain.
I like another Aidan O’Brien trainee Hydrangea at 6-1, who enters having finished second in three straight races to continue that trend and get in for second with North American entry, 9-2 second choice La Coronel claiming third.
She is peaking ahead of this weekend and enters off a win in the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland.
If you are looking for some value here – New Money Honey at 10-1 could be your best bet – she won the G3 Miss Grillo Stakes last time out and looked good in the process.
Good luck and enjoy what promises to be a sensational day of racing!
