NFL Handicapping Insight
Denver really weathered the storm when Manning went down. Brock Osweiler stepped in and found solid connections and chemistry with the receivers out wide. The Broncos beat the likes of New England and Cincinnati, the other 12-4 teams in the AFC to grab the overall #1 spot in the playoffs.
Overall #1 in the AFC
Clinching home field advantage gives Denver the biggest edge in the AFC. This team actually had the ability to fall out of the playoffs with losses in week 16 and 17.
Denver showed how important home field is as they tackled both the Bengals and Chargers in the final two weeks of the season to not only secure the top seed, but also secure their playoff spot.
Peyton Manning has proven he can be winner and there is no doubt about that. When Manning did go down, Osweiler stepped in and showed tremendous talent and composure.
Osweiler threw for nearly 2000 yards and had 10 touchdowns this season. It’s likely Manning will get the first go at it in the playoffs, however should he struggle or go down with another injury, it’s good to know Osweiler is there for support.
Mile High Air
Having the overall #1 seed in the AFC has it’s perks with home field advantage, but Denver really gets the advantage with the way their field is set up.
Opponents will have to come into the thin air that sits at 5280-foot altitude. Combine that with the deafening crowd noise and what should be below freezing temps and Denver is used to this all.
The Broncos hold a 15-5 record at home in the postseason and went 6-2 this season.
Defense Wins Championships
Denver’s defense was sneakily one of the best in the NFL. In his first year as defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips shined by building many different blitz packages along with forcing turnovers.
Denver led the NFL by allowing just 283.1 yards per game. Denver also led the NFL in sacks with 52. Von Miller led the team with 11 overall.
This defense will be swarming and combine that with the bad weather conditions poised for Denver, they will cause many fits for the opposition.
Peyton Manning has been one of the best QBs in the NFL and has left his lasting legacy not only in Denver, but throughout the NFL.
How fitting would be for the Broncos to capture a Superbowl title and send Peyton Manning out with a bang?
The stage is set with them being the #1 seed in the AFC and Manning being 100% healthy.
